Leap Frog Leap Pad Problems

Does anyone have this problem, you get started and 5 minutes later it doesn't recognize the words or letters that you are pointing to? I just bought a second one off ebay and wondering if is the batteries I am using or just the system itself. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have never had it happen. We have 3 leappads and a my first leappad.

We've had 3 of them for DS4 (all were hand-me-downs/garage sale finds) and 2 of the 3 have had a similar issue. It turns on but then seems to "say" whatever it chooses, rather than what you are touching. DH thought it was the pen that went bad on the last one, but who knows. Wish I could be of more help, but we've not had much luck with fixing them so far (and DS has been very gentle w/them).
