We are first time homeowners and never had to worry about our own repairs so DH doesn't really know much about it. The faucet in our tub is leaking or should I say dripping, has been for a while and just finally decided to see "how much" water was being wasted. After 12 hours I have collected about 4 cups of water or 36 oz.....no wonder our water bill is up! Anyway, DH wants to tackle fixing it himself, but has no experience so I was wondering if anyone knows of a good reference book (Home Repairs for Dummies or something of the sort) that will guide him through fixing our leaky faucet. Or if anyone who has any experience with this has any advice.

TIA!

WE are in the same boat (no pun) our tub faucet leaks and my husband who is mechanically challenged fixed it a couple of times. We have one of those Symmonds Mixers not seperate controls for hot and cold. It is a pain and I cannot stand the sound of running water. Anyway if you put a bucket under it you will see it drips a lot! I say get a plumber. We need our b room done over but as yet I cannot bring myself to do it not because I do not want to pay but rather my expeience with contractors has been such that if the ones I have hired in the past walk in front of my car I fear I will run them over!!

It's easy for me for I am Monkeyboy fixer of the realm

but for you...call a plumber

Remember when Cliff Huxtable tried to fix the shower???

Call a plumber!

You guys are not encouraging! I think I may be in trouble! DH is off to the library tomorrow to get a book!

How expensive is a plumber anyway?

In our area, minimum of $55 an hour plus a service call.

Have him go to Home Depot or Lowes and ask for plumbing books. The guys that work there also know a lot and usually will let you pick their brain if you have questions.

Hope he can find a good book to help out. The Home Depot idea was another good one.

If you want I can let you borrow my cat until it is fixed. He loves it when a faucet is leaking. :dog2: If that was a cat that would be a perfect picture of Galaxy at a leaking faucet. :flower:

up here a good plumber is about $50/hour!

I had the same problem with my tub

It was just a $10 piece (kind of like a washer) unfortunatly, my father who is a plumber fixed it for me, but he said it was an easy fix. I'm sure Home Depot will have a book that will help you

Well, DH went to the library and checked out a few books tonight. I think I will suggest he talk to the guys at Home Depot when he heads over there.

Great idea about the cat, chell, we had one for 17 years and he loved to catch the drips too! :)

It should be an easy fix. It is probably the washers that are "under" the handle. Pretty easy to unscrew the handles. make sure you turn the water off to the area, just in case. They could look like washers, or they could require "packing" which you thread yourself, and pull off a roll.

Have fun with the joys of home ownership
