Le Cellier disappointment

To each is there own I suppose, I was really really excited to try Le Cellier but the food just wasn't great (to me)

I liked the bread, but the cheddar soup was so salty I really tried to like it, but I just couldn't.

I order the mushroom filet mignon for my meal and that too was so salty I only ate the steak.

Maybe its because I have done WW for many years and never really had a lot of salt?

I recall seeing a few post about others thinking its to salty too, but fiance got the open faced steak sub I think. And he really enjoyed that.

At least I can say I went :)

we hated it after a horrible experience in may.

but i lurk around here and decide dmaybe we should give it another shot.

went back in november...
we didn't even stay for dessert--we will NEVER go back there. no more chances, ever.

guess i just gave a preview of a coming story on my dining report :rotfl:

Oh no! We were going to try it for the first time next week... can you request that they use less salt? Im guessing they can't on the soup of course but at least on my steak? I've had it be a problem in other restaurants as well so I know it is just me being sensitive but we tend to use 0 salt where we can at home even when following recipes so I am guessing I am going to have the same problem as you... :sad2:

We had the exact same problem. I was SOO excited to try it after all of the great things you hear about it. The bread was awesome, but the soup was so salty. The filet was insanely salty. Like i have never eaten anything so salty in my life. It was a disappointment :( We plan on trying it again after it changes menus.

ETA: I wanted to add however, the service was GREAT! Super friendly waitress... she was very helpful. If only the food was as good

You can ask for a steak that has not been seasoned, but it will have NO seasoning at all. I think they marinate the steaks here, but have a limited supply of plain meat that has not been marinated ahead of time.

I like the seasoning, but not the heavy amount of salt!

That's strange, I have never noticed anything there being too salty...in fact, when my DH and I were there in November, I was wishing there was a salt shaker on the table for my filet! I've had nothing but great experiences at Le Cellier, I'm sorry it was so bad for some of you, since everyone raves about it!

agree it has to be a matter of sensitivity to salt because we've eaten there several times (including the cheese soup) and never thought the food tasted overly-salted.

I do know my sis has also done WW for years, as well as eats a lot of diet frozen meals like Lean Cuisine and she often finds restaurant food too salty. Think most diet foods do control salt intake quite a bit, so can change your taste preferences.

Was considering LC for our upcoming trip but couldn't get a res. Based on some of the comments I'm not too disappointed. We don't use much salt and I would bevery disappointed in a meal that over used it. Still we'll have to try it sometime to see what the fuss is about. IMO seems more like a Studio 54 (for those foggies in the crowd) effect than a great place to dine. ;)

We went for the first time a few weeks ago. I didn't get the soup (not a soup fan) and got the mushroom filet, minus the mushrooms and potatoes instead of the risotto. It was pretty good, not too salty. It was a nice cut of meat, cooked perfectly. I liked it but didn't LOVE it and wouldn't get up in the middle of the night to snag a reservation. There just happened to be a lunch reservation for my Epcot day, so I took it. I wanted to try it once.
I had the mousse for desert and it was pretty good. The waiter was real nice and the food came out quickly. We didn't wait very long to be seated either. The best meal so far I have had at WDW was at Turf Club at SSR. I had a wonderful steak with crab meat. We ate their twice and both times were great. Beautiful setting and great service.

Though the menu and recipes stay the same every day, it does not mean every line cook prepares the food in the exact same way every day.

Assuming this recipe is correct, the soup should not be heavily salted --

We were at a restaurant a few weeks ago, which has consistently gotten good reviews. Our friends enjoy it. We are not very sensitive to salt --- but every item we ordered tasted like a pretzel. On that day, someone just got over enthusiastic with the salt. So maybe, quite possibly, it was just an off day. Or maybe it is just as salty every day.

I totally agree. We've been there twice, dinner and lunch, and will never go back. In September I had the cheddar soup and the filet. The soup was not only too salty but too peppery. And the filet was too salty and the mushrooms completely overwhelmed the flavor. And I love mushrooms (and salt!). We were very disappointed.

My family and I had dinner there on 11/22. My husband and I both had the mushroom filet and agreed that while the steaks were tender, both the steak and the mushroom risotto were too salty. However, the soup was PERFECTION and our kids' New York strip steaks were not perfectly seasoned and not too salty.

If you have a reservation and haven't tried LC before, I would definitely go and give it a try. The service is fantastic and we still really enjoyed our meal there.

Sorry for your experience. My family loves the mushroom filet, particularly because of the risotto. We find it very yummy. That said, I would be content to order risotto (with the sauce) and the creme brulee. I could take or leave the steak - though it is very good! The cheese soup comes on our kiddos meal, but that is way more than enough for all of us - we use it to dip the pretzel bread in.

We eat at Le Cellier every trip and love it!! I am extremely sensitive to salt and have never noticed the soup or the filet to be overly salty.

Well, we are back and I have to admit that my shyness got the better of me and I made no request to leave off the salt on the steak, and I'm glad I didn't if they would have left off all the seasoning because it was just great! :thumbsup2 The cup of cheddar cheese soup was a little salty and the risotto VERY salty though - hopefully there will be a different side with it after the menu change since I am going back with my fiance in early March. I could not finish my desert there was just so much food and I only had a little bit of the pretzel bread!

We ate lunch there yesterday (Christmas Eve) for the CP Package and weren't nearly as impressed as we have been previously.

Cheddar Cheese Soup was salty, but to be honest I enjoyed it.
Chicken/Chipotle sausage - very spicy, very salty
Mussels - we didn't eat them, semed undercooked, a HUGE dollop of garlic butter thrown on top. Ridiculous.

Steaks - good without being exceptional, the gratin potato full of garlic and salt, the sides of spinach covered in cheese, mushrooms ok.

Desserts - best part of the meal. Creme Brulee exceptional, the chocolate moose (sic) was fun and delicious.

Server was pleasant although she was young and totally unaware of the responsibilities of looking after a table - empty glasses, bread still on the table, no cutlery, no serving spoons etc

NOTE TO ANYONE ON THE CP PACKAGE - WE WERE CHARGED INCORRECTLY TWICE. She explained that it was a different system so I had been charged for desserts and then the bill was wrong again. Check before you sign.

The total bill for 4 of us was $300 including gratuity, admittedly it was for the CP package. We have a booking for NYE lunch which I am about to cancel. I think we'd rather grab something on the go instead of doing Le Cellier again.

We at there 12/6 (haven't gotten to it yet in my dining review). Personally, I loved it, but DH said he didn't see anything special about the food. He thought the food was good, just not as outstanding as everyone makes it out to be. We were both a little underwhelmed by the cheddar cheese soup, but not because it was too salty. I think we both tasted the saltiness, but we liked that part of it. We just didn't think the flavor was as amazing as the hype. Both of us LOVED the mushroom risotto, though, and didn't think it was too salty at all. We had a really nice waiter and an overall good experience. We're going back for lunch this January, so we'll see what happens the second time around.

To the OP, sorry you had a bad experience. I think that people who don't like salty food would probably be unhappy there. We didn't feel the food was too salty, but definitely tasted the salt.

In a 10 night trip, this was the least favorite meal for all of us. None of the adults could understand all the hype :confused3 My parents enjoyed the food (we all thought the desserts were awful though), but we were also not fond of the atmosphere or our server so that influenced our overall impression.

The only thing we really enjoyed was the pretzel bread and they would not bring us enough for one piece per person. :sad2:

Unfortunately I think Le Cellier suffers from serious "overhype". We read so many "glowing" reviews of the place that I think we develope a high expectation of the place.

I've been 3X's and every time the food has not been worth the money. So it's off my list.

I'm still trying to figure out how they are going to justify charging 2 credits for dinner.
