I have a question for those of you who have high LDL cholesterol levels. I just came back from the DR. and my LDL is high.

My mom has this same type of problem, so we are thinking it is heredity related. I exercise 5 days a week. I do not eat fried foods. Beverage is mainly water. I do not smoke or drink. My diet is high protein, which will be changed.

How have you changed your diet to lower your numbers? Was there a food that you added that helped bring it down?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. TIA

My doc just told me 2 weeks ago that I have high Cholesterol. I started taking Red Yeast Rice, Niacin and Fish Oil capsules. I also cut out all butter and almost all Cheese. I don't eat fried foods so I can't cut that out. I am also taking Psyllium (sp) capsules.

Minnie what is Red Yeast Rice? Is that a vitamin? What type of Fish Oil capsules are you taking?

Very rarely do I eat cheese or use butter.

Currently I take Lipitor for cholesterol. However, I'm in the process of trying to lower my numbers. My doctor recommends oatmeal. I have a friend who had high LDL, so she switched to eating oatmeal for breakfast every morning. Swears by it!

My LDL was 179 6 months ago and the Doc put me on Simvestatin (spelling?). I just changed my diet by eating less red meat and cheese and started eating more walnuts and almonds.

Now my HDL is 45 and my LDL is 69 and the Doc took me off the Meds....sometimes Diet is all that needs changing.....good luck :thumbsup2

My doc told me that heredity is the main trigger for high cholesterol, and that if that is the trigger then food has very little to do with your levels. My mother is the healthiest eater I have ever seen, and she is on cholesterol meds probably for life.

But good for you for getting your levels checked!! Whether the cause is diet or genes, you can do something about it. I found out about the gene thing with my mom right after I had a heart attack at 44 and a stent put in due to a clogged artery I didn't know I had. And while I am not the uber-healthy eater my mom is, I was never eating double bacon cheeseburgers with fried eggs on top or anything. I was never sick or feeling bad at all -- I just never thought to get my levels checked. Apparently my numbers at that point were HIGH. Really high.

I've changed my diet and been on Pravastatin for the past year and a half, and my numbers are normal now. :-)

Whatever you have to do, diet or drugs or whatever, just do it. I wish you the very best!!

Red Yeats Rice is a dietary supplement like a vitamin. I take 1200 mg burpless Fish Oil capsules (4 a day). I also take a FLUSH FREE Niacin. It doesn't cause you to turn red and have hot flashes.

Thanks Simba's Mom I bought steel cut oats. Only thing is I added 2 tsp of brown sugar to make them taste better. Hopefully I am not doing any harm by adding the sugar.

This is great news. I hope my LDL number goes down and soon.

So sorry for you to have experienced this. I bet this was scary. Glad your numbers are normal.

Thanks for the wishes. I am taking this very serious. My Dr. is hoping my numbers will go down with adding fish oil and psyllium to my diet.

DH has been on cholesterol meds since before they had cholesterol meds (cholesterol at 383 when he was 29 did that), and the doctor put him on the no-flush niacin. He took that for about 5 years, until the statins came out (or at least were readily available)
