our 42" Toshiba projection just died(actually went out of alignment and wont self adjust). We have had it for 5-7 years so I think we got our moneys worth. Now we are looking at LCDs. I dont know what brands are good tho.
I think we will steer clear of Insignia(had a regular tv of theirs which was junk) but really dont know much about the others. thanks

We have a 52" Samsung LCD and we LOVE it. Only had it since December (Christmas present to each other) but its almost constantly on. Best looking black and other colors in my opinion.

No particular recommendation but one thing to look at is contrast ratio. The higher, the better.

We love our Samsung and our Sony! We actually have 2 Sony's in the house and they are great. We most recently bought a Sony to replace a Vizio that died 13 months after we bought it. Of course it was no longer under warranty and it was $400 to fix. I searched around and found many others with the same problem. I will never buy a Vizio again.

One other thing. Not all "Brand X" or "Brand Y" models are equal in quality and performance. Many brands have several lines within their brand. Very similar to car makers. Like Chevy, Buick and Cadillac. For example, they may have several 42 inch models and the lower priced ones are not as good as the more expensive ones. It's not an absolute but it's quite common.

And an other thing...

If you watch a lot of sports or action movies which usually have fast moving action, look for models that do better with those scenes. One model I was looking at talked about the "frequency" used to display motion. 60hz is standard. 120hz is another. Usually the higher the "hz" means less blurry motion.

We have a 42" Sharp Aquos and are very happy with it. Don't know all of the lingo but I know DH researched a LOT and asked quite a bit of questions prior to purchasing.

Charade made me want to be specific. We love our Vizio bought from Costco, not the version at WalMart.

And you would not believe how much getting an HDMI cable from cable box to TV has made, in an already very very good picture from the Vizio with digital cable. We had a component cable before, but this HDMI cable has made a HUGE difference. Just like hubby said it would. Sometimes he knows what he's talking about.:upsidedow

We just bought a 52 inch Sony LCD from Costco. It has a 10 bit color processor which was not available at other stores on a 52 inch (other stores had 8 bit). I think the 10 bit was available at other stores in smaller screens.I couldnt see a difference, but dh said it was something he wanted.

We're looking at LCD's - have been told the 3 S's are the "best" - Sony, Sharp, Samsung.

We were looking at an Olevia at Sam's club - found out their tv's are made from overstock parts from tv companies - if that makes sense - overstock is sold to their warehouse, so it may have parts from several different companies inside.

My DH found a website that shows what size tv you "should" get for the room size :scared1: our living room is 17x20, so the tv size was off the charts, and he is "settling" for a 60/65 inch. Yikes.

I think the 52 is the standard "big screen" size.

If you want the best TV get the Pioneer Kuro.

FYI, these are plasma TVs. I was seriously considering a plasma, but we use a PS3 as both our Blu-ray player and video game console. LCD TV's are better suited for games (which can cause burn-in on plasmas).

Stay AWAY from LG LCD tv's. We had two (one was a replacement) 42" LCD's and they both died within a year. Same problem. Still have one and so far, so good, but it was the third within a year. If this one dies, I'm just going to throw it out the second floor window and buy something else.

Also get the 1080 dpi or whatever it's called. It makes a difference.

very little TV content comes in on 1080p, although it would like make blue ray's look better. here's an interesting artlice on the subject that was written last december.

For the OP, no matter what tv you buy I would recommend checking out places like CNET to see what they are their readers think.

That is true but ghosting is more of a problem on LCD. Burn in is alot more preventable than ghosting so thats why I would chose a Plasma.
