Layout help needed

I saw this one page (12x12) layout on another site -- it had a 1/2 inch border all the way around the page. Then, the remaining 11x11 was broken into 4 "blocks", let's say of 2 4.25x6.25 and 2 6.25x4.25 each. Follow me so far?? If so, keep following me. There is a margin of space left between the 4 blocks to show the underlying 12x12 cardstock. The vertical spaces are narrower (by approximately 1/2) than the horizontal spaces. How can that be and still have it appear square???

PM me if you'd like me to send the link to the sketch if that will help you visualize my description better. I'm trying to figure out the measurement of the block to create the layout.

The sketch can't be to scale. I just made one, I can post pics after I get the kids.

If you start with 1 12x12 and 4 mats 6.25 x 4.25
1/2 in border around the 12 x 12

you get 1/2 inch gap between each mat all the way around.

I see the problem, if you hold a ruler up to the sketch the left side border is 3/16th and the right side is only 2/16th. But the top and bottom are equal at 2/16th. They didn't get a prefect square when making the template.

ETA yep, you can post links to different sites unless they are blocked by the DIS, those will come up as ****.

It looks as if the 4 blocks are rectangular not square. Hypothetically, if you remove the top layer, there would be a perfect square in the center. My example is not the exact dimensions, but I think that will accomplish what you want. I re-read your post and realized that you needed the dimensions. Sorry!

I knew I could count on all of you -- I didn't see how the gaps could be different -- I'm going with 4.25x6.25 and be done with it. I've been working on my Girl Scout scrapbook, our troop is meeting for the final time this weekend after 11 years of being together and I'd like to share the album with the girls. I'm going to miss all my "daughters". I'd like to get as caught up as I possibly can and really liked this layout for a single 5x7 end of year group photo.
