Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get some sort of discount on a lawnmower? We have a large yard but we don't want a ride-on.. just something that can handle all that grass. We had been paying someone $40 every other week to do it, and we determined that we'd probably have to pay about $360-$400 for the rest of the year. But we don't really want to spend that much on a lawnmower, either.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Our Home Depot sells refurbished ones. I know DH got a great deal on one that he bought for our DS to use for cutting our neighbors lawns.

Don't buy a house with a big yard? I don't know how you get away from buying a decent lawnmower if you have a big yard. It is kinda like having 5 kids and saying you don't want to buy a big vehicle.

I don't know the prices for sure my DH takes care of those purchases but I do know you want a self propelled, mulching one. You don't want a bagged only if you have a big yard that is too much grass clippings to deal with twice a week thru the summer.

We have a Sears Craftsman and have had it for several years. And one before that. I don't know how you are going to get away with not paying around $300 for one. But it will last several years so it is a one time expense (plus new blade occasionally and some maintenance) VS paying someone.

So look for a good reputation, self propelled and mulching.

You could always ask on Freecycle if anyone has one they don't need. Probably won't work, but it never hurts to ask.

To me it would be worth $400 to not have to mow your own yard all summer.

If you have a big yard you are definitely going to want a self propelled mower and in most cases you are going to pay MORE than $400 for the mower.

About 5 years ago I bought my dad a HONDA self propelled mower from Home Depot and it was $700 and it wasn't even the most expensive one they had.

You can go buy some crappy little non-self propelled mower from Walmart for around $200 but you will end up regretting it.

We have a big yard (1.5 acres) and we have a ride on zero turn commercial mower that costs $5000 and it is worth every penny to be able to sit on it and zoom around the yard and be done with it in a few minutes.

We bought a self-propelled mower 2 years ago after we got tired of paying a yard guy $45 every other week. At the time, we were on a budget. We bought a self-propelled one at Wal-Mart that you use with or without a bag. It cost us just under $200.

This week is a great time to buy w/ Father's day coming up. I bought my pushmower at Sears for around $200 a few years ago (not self-propelled). My grass area to cut is right under half an acre. How much is your 'big yard"?

Not having to pay someone to cut, you should have the thing paid for fairly quickly, and then next year, you're scot free except for gas and such!

If you want reliability - HONDA... I have it for a while and it is worth every penny... I have never had any issues starting it...

Briggs and Stratton. Parked a 3.5 hp $100 mower for the winter outside next to the mobile we were living in. Come to find that the gutter on the mobile just ran off the end and ran directly down onto the mower. I live in Pennsylvania, the mower was a solid block of ice. I don't mean there was ice on the mower, I mean there was a literal block of ice with a mower inside.

That was in 1997. We still use that mower for trim work. Never change the oil and still the original plug. (2 acres, we ride on a 52 inch 25 hp garden tractor now.) The only thing I've done to the mower was replace the start cord 3 times. The throttle cable snapped years ago, governor on the carb is royally messed up, and the bar you have to hold to run it, the cable snapped years ago and the corrosion keeps the loose cable from shutting the mower down (my wife puts just a small amount in the gas tank and just runs it out.) Still starts every year in the spring with about 3 pulls.
