I was thinking something was on my computer and Norton said there was nothing. After reading past posts here I went to lavasoft to download adaware to see what that might find. From lavasoft it sent me to cnet downloads for the ad aware 6.0 program. While it said a download would take several seconds, nothing ever happened, so I got suspicious and turned off the computer. Now Zonealarm keeps blocking security intrusions from cnet, although I never installed what I didn't actually download. What have I done to my computer????

I don't even know what Lavasoft is!!

I am sure nothing, my3kids. I use both Ad-aware and Zone Alarm. Just go to the download site again http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button and if Zone Alarm pops in, give it an okay. It is just telling you that something is trying to access your PC, in this case, it is okay. Both programs are great. In fact, after using the free Ad-aware for quite a few months, I popped the 20 or so dollars for the 'Plus' version, now it is proactive rather than just reactive and my having to do scans. it works great.

It seems to me as though your computer is trying to finish the Lavasoft download and your firewall is blocking it. My suggestion is to turn off your firewall, download Lavasoft, install it, and turn your firewall back on.
Hope this helps

Downloading again. It says it is downloading, but it has been way more than the few seconds it is supposed to take. There is no progress bar or indication that anything is happening, other than the inverted arrow moving into the semi circle shape.

Now it has been about 15 minutes downloading what is supposed to take 17 seconds. I think something is wrong here!!

Do you, as Brian suggested, have ZA off? Are you downloading to an 'open' or a 'save'?

It didn't give any options, nor did ZA ask if it could access. Always, windows pops up with a question about downloading files, and this time, nothing.

Is there a different company to try?

Well, Ad-aware is recognized as probably the best, but also Spybot S&D is great, especially when used in conjunction with Ad-awware. Here is their download site.....

Since I went to the Plus version of Ad-aware, anytime I run Spybot, it comes up with nothing, Ad-aware works wonderfully.

You also might try these mirror sites for downloading Ad-aware...........

And lastly, maybe go to your Add/Remoce programs in your Control Panel and see if you have Ad-aware or Lavasoft there first. If so, remove it and start fresh. You may have a partial or corrupted download from your first try and it is goofying up any others.
