Laur's and Andy tackle the Big Apple Day 1
We are:
Laurs 28
Andy 28
Saturday 4 August
After lots of last minute planning and ticket booking, the day for beginning our first timers adventure to NYC had arrived. I finally managed to crawl out of bed at 6 am, and lovely hubby Andy brought us up some breakfast. The taxi driver turned up at 6.15 am and was very rude when I said we would be another 5 or 10 minutes not a good start to the day.
I sulked all the way to the airport until we arrived at 7.30 am. We checked in (early, no idea what the taxi driver was bothered about) for our 11am flight and discovered that there was a one hour delay. This being the case, and having plenty of time before boarding even started, we went for some breakfast. We had a cup of tea each and some fresh orange juice. I had a sausage and egg bap and Andy had a traditional English breakfast.
We got through Security fairly quickly and then mooched around the shops a bit waiting for boarding time. After a while we went over to sit at the gate, until they finally called boarding at 12.30 pm. By this time I was in a real panic. I hate flying anyway and had never imagined I would be brave enough to fly to New York. Well, I nearly wasnt. I have never wanted to get off a plane so much in my life. After another valium and a few cuddles though I managed to calm down. I am pleased to report that I was able to be brave after that and we had an uneventful flight, leaving at 1 pm.
The pilot cheered me up by announcing that under Federal Law you could only use the toilets in your own class! That kept me laughing for ages. The drinks trolley came round and we both had a diet coke. (Andy was not impressed with the lack of alcohol on Delta flights!) They also handed out peanuts of which I devoured two packets as Andy cannot eat them.
They put the first film on (Shrek 3) and lunch followed shortly afterwards. I had the pasta dish, and Andy had chicken. There were the usual accompaniments; salad (lettuce, tomato, feta cheese and vinaigrette), bread bun, cheese and crackers and a chocolate oat biscuit (hmm, I thought this was a bit of a poor excuse for a pudding!) Cant tell you much about Shrek 3 as I dozed through most of it, though what I saw wasnt very exciting and didnt hold my attention much.
In the afternoon, the cabin crew came through passing out little tubs of vanilla Haagan-Daaz (result! Thats much more like it) and we watched a second film, Spiderman 3. I really enjoyed this, it was darker than the previous films in the Spiderman franchise.
Tea was a four cheese pizza (what is it with Americans and cheese? I love cheese as much as the next person but a bit of ham and pineapple wouldnt go amiss every now and again) and a shortbread biscuit.
We arrived at JFK at 3.30 pm. A hydraulic bus was attached to the plane for us to get off on to how weird is that?! I texted my mum as there doesnt seem to be the same rules about when you can switch your phone on in America they announced that you could do it as soon as the plane landed. Customs seemed a lot less organised than at MCO and we seemed to wait for ages. We got through about 4.15 pm and went to collect our luggage (at least you only have to collect it once here!)
We went through to find our transportation to the hotel which Andy had booked in advance. However, unbeknownst to me, Andy had booked us a limo to take us to the hotel! I was so excited, I have always wanted a go in a limo. It was so amazing, we sat on the long leather seat in the middle and there were chilled drinks. We had a sunkist soda each and some water and watched the pretty colour changing sparkles in the headliner. Once Andy pointed out to me that the windows were tinted, I also had lots of fun poking my tongue out at people who couldnt see me! Ah, so childish.
We arrived at the hotel far too quickly (I was enjoying myself!) at 5.30 pm. We had chosen the Hotel Metro after Michelle stayed there and said how good the location was. And it really was. Macys is across the street, the Empire State Building is a block away and its also walking distance to Times Square. We checked in, dumped our luggage and got changed before venturing out into New York proper.
We had a wander around for a while trying to get our bearings and popped into Victorias Secret so that I could plan what I might like to buy later in the week! After that we made our way over to Macys, had a quick look round and then headed to McDonalds for a sit down! I had a Happy Meal, supposedly with 4 chicken nuggets but I ended up with 5 (bonus) and a little build a bear with his own t-shirt. As usual, by this point I was much more interested in the toy than the food. Andy had a two cheeseburger meal which he managed to eat most of.
We headed back to the room as we were both shattered and to my relief the basket I had ordered as an early birthday surprise for Andy had arrived. I had asked for a New York themed basket so he had an American flag, model police car, Statue of Liberty keyring, World Trade Center photo frame, an apple pen, 3 big apples, cheese crackers, cheese sticks, monteray jack cheese, gourmet chocolates and chocolate and raspberry cookies. Very nice.
We played with the stuff for a while and I wanted to fall straight into bed, but we managed to have a shower each first. Andy had a beer from the mini bar and I had a diet coke, we watched a bit of TV then admitted defeat and collapsed into bed at 10 pm.
