Laurie's Quest Continues....two more marathons in one year!!

Well, it has been so hectic for me this week, I forgot to post after my GREAT run the other day!! i finished 5 miles in about 47 min. For a pace of around 9:30..don't have the exact numbers with me right now!! But I was really psyched, it was my first run since my half where my body felt great!!!

That was Thursday and I haven't had a chance to run since then, but I plan to do a longer run tomorrow. I am planning on doing 7-8 miles.

I am babysitting my niece and nephew right now!! Had to take my niece to soccer this morning, and nephew to t-ball and soccer this afternoon. It was a busy day, but it was awesome to see them playing sports! My niece is 4 and my nephew is 5! It was just great to see them having fun and playing with other kids!

Ok....back to the kids!

:thumbsup2 AWESOME run Laurie :). I knew you'd be back in top form in NO TIME at all! I'm really happy for you!

Have fun with your niece and nephew today. Funny thing is that I'm babysitting my two nephews today LOL! They are 2 and 4....lots of energy but SOOO cute!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Well, I survived my babysitting adventure with my niece and nephew..but they are two exhausting little kids!!!! We had a blast though and I was sad that I had to leave them last night and head home!

This morning, I had planned to head out for a 7 mile run, but ended up only going 5 miles. I felt great during the 5 miles and finished in 9:33. I was starting to feel some aches and pains during my run, so that is why I only did 5 instead of 7. I think some of the aches and pains might be due to my shoes getting old and reaching their limits. They have about 250-300 miles on them and are looking pretty run down!

So, I decided to head to our local Fleet Feet running store to get a new pair of running shoes. This is where I got my last pair of shoes, and the service was great. As soon as I got there, one of the employees asked if I needed any help, i told her I was looking for a new pair of running shoes. I explained to her what shoes I had..style/size, and I told her that I felt like my toes were rubbing, especially on my long runs. She suggested that I go up a half size. she went into the back and brought out 6-7 different pairs of shoes. I tried them all on and some felt great right away and others I went out to jog up and down the street. I finally decided on the Mizuno Wave Riders! This is a change for me because I have always wore Nike, but they just haven't felt right lately, so I am going to try the Mizunos. The best part of the shopping trip is that Fleet Feet gives you a $25 gift certificate every time you accumulate a total of $250 in purchases, and with the shoes I did that...so I got the gift certificate to spend on my next visit!!

The plan is to run 5 miles tomorrow and wednesday before my next race the Spring Lake 5 mile run which is next saturday!

Amy--Thanks for the encouragement!

Hi Laurie,

Great run!:thumbsup2 That's great that you listened to your body and cut your run a bit short. :goodvibes How are the new shoes working out?

Hope you have a great week!:cool1:

Congrats on the games & getting to go to Toronto!

My DS20 is the Zamboni Driver for the local CHL league, so I'm learning a LOT about Hockey! I can't even imagine the shape you must be in! It's TOUGH!!

Great runs!

Have a great rest of the week & weekend!

Just starting to get caught up and I see that your team won and you are going to Toronto. Congratulations! When do you go? And how long do you stay? If you like Museums go to the ROM. Royal Ontario Museum. Are you staying in Toronto downtown area?
I see you are training well. I too had to go up a half size in shoes. They look big to me but sure feel alot better.

WOW, i am behind on my journal!!!!

First to catch up on my workouts this week, which I will start out by saying were not so good for me!! I planned on doing 5 miles on monday and wednesday. Well, both days I didn't make it the full 5 miles, I just wasn't feeling it. On monday, I only made it 3 miles and I had to walk most of the second mile. Then on wednesday, I only made it 4 miles and I had to walk the last two miles. Needless to say, this had me very worried about my race yesterday. I was really scared that I wasn't even going to be able to jog the whole way. My new shoes felt great, but my legs just felt heavy and I just couldn't run. I rested on thursday and friday, and decided to just do what I could in the race on saturday.

Here is the race report I posted on the race report thread:

Yesterday, I did the Sping Lake 5 miler at the Jersey Shore. MY DBF (my scream team) and I arrived in Spring Lake around 8 am, found a parking spot and headed to the starting line. Since we had to park quite a ways away from the starting line, I did an easy jog to warm up a little. We got to the starting line which was on Ocean Ave, which runs parallel to the beach and ocean! Before the race, I had a little time to stretch out a bit which was great. It was quite hot out yesterday and at 8:30am it was probably in the low 80's already!! Well, there was SOOOOOOOOO....many people running this race it was crazy. The race started right on time at 8:30, and we were off down Ocean Ave. It took me approx. 2-3 minutes to cross the actual starting line. As I crossed, I started up my watch so I could keep my time along the way. I actually had my ipod yesterday too, which I haven't in my previous two races, and I don't think it made a difference for me.

The course was a nice run through Spring Lake, which is a very nice beach town on the jersey shore, lots of beautiful houses along the way. The only problem I felt was that there was just so many people and the street was just not wide enough. I probably ran the first mile and half on the grass/sidewalk on the side of the street. I just never felt like the crowd thinned out until the last 100 meters or so. I found it very hard to pass people, and I felt like I was weaving in and out of people the whole way!! The course was flat, no hills at all. Since it was so hot, they had several fire trucks along the way spraying water out, which was AWESOME!! I ran through each one and that kept my body temp. down, they also had plenty of water at each mile mark to keep hydrated!

My watch time was 48:14, with an average pace of just under 9:30. I was very pleased and happy with my race. Not sure what my official time was, as they haven't posted them yet. After the race, I got my medal, and then they had water, bananas, cookies, Quiznos sandwiches, and soda for free. We picked up some food, sat and ate a little bit, then we headed back to the car to head home.

All in all, it was a nice race, I didn't see any other WISH team members, Kareneast and her DH were supposed to run. I had my shirt on but there was just soooooo... many people that it was nearly impossible to find anyone!

I was really psyched after my race, I jogged the whole way and felt really great! That was a huge relief for me. I think I need to find some other races throughout the summer to motivate me to run until I start my formal marathon plan in september.

Tracy-New shoes are great, I am really getting used to them and I love them!!

goldcupmom--thanks! I am really excited about Toronto! Your DS is lucky.. I would love to drive the zamboni someday...lol!!!! :rotfl:

Carole--We are heading up to Toronto right after work on Thursday. We should arrive around midnight. We are staying near the airport. We have one game friday, two on saturday and possibly two on sunday. We probably won't have too much time for sightseeing, but I definetely want to visit the Hockey Hall of Fame. We will try to do some nice restaurants also. Not sure of the game schedule yet, so that will determine how much free time we have.

Hi Laurie!

CONGRATULATIONS on your 5 Mile race. Awesome time :). :goodvibes :thumbsup2

I'm glad you were able to shake a few bad runs and have a great time at the race this weekend!

Way to go...and enjoy your long weekend :).

Laurie, Congrats on finishing the Spring Lake 5. I didn't think of you yesterday but did this afternoon when I saw the paper with the picture of all the people running the race. I was surprised at how many people ran the race yesterday

Great times. I'm so glad you felt well and your race was successful. And you ran the whole race! Awesome.
I think looking for races is a great idea to stay motivated. Without the Running Room club I'm sure I would lose my motivation. I just joined up for the half marathon clinic which starts in June after my 10 K race.
Enjoy Toronto. The airport area is not the pretty area...its actually Missasauga area. But I remember when Kim was in precission skating we rarely saw the city we were in. Just lots of arenas. lol.

Well, no training to report on here today...too many things going on with the holiday weekend. DBF and I did walk to the local parade today which probably ended up being about a mile and half, so i guess that should count for something. Then we hung out with his family for awhile and BBQed, which was a lot of fun. I had to come home a little early since i have to get up early for work tomorrow!!

I plan on running tomorrow, not sure how far. I may end up playing hockey tomorrow night and if so, I will only run 2-3 miles. If I don't end up playing, I will do a bit more!

Now I just have to find a couple of races to put on my calender for some motivation!!

Amy--Thanks!! It was a huge relief for me to be able to have a good race, I was a bit stressed all week about the runs I was having and I was worried about the race, almost to a point where I just didn't want to go. But I kept telling myself I would be able to do it!! So, I was really happy with how I did!

Dona--Thanks! Yeah, I couldn't believe how many people ran that race, it was crazy!! Spring lake is a great town, and it was a nice race!!

Carole--We chose Missisaugua because it is closer to the rinks we are playing at, but since we are driving up we will be able to get around to see the city and other sites.

No running to report on today. Since I decided to go play hockey tonight to practice for our tournament this weekend, I decided to wait until tomorrow to run.

Can't wait for my big hockey tournament in Toronto this weekend!!! HOpefully, my team will play well!!

Thanks Tracy! I am really excited about this tournament!!! I guess I don't have to worry about not running since I will be playing 4-5 hockey games in three days. I think that will be my XT for the weekend!!

Good luck in Toronto!! If you feel like running there the harbourfront area is a good track. Right along the lake. Not that you will probably get time. Thats alot of games!

Wow, I have been busy this week!! No time to catch up on my journal and everyone else's.

My hockey tournament in Toronto was a blast. We only won our first game, and then lost the rest, but it was a lot of fun. We played teams that were awesome! It was a great test for my team as all season here in NJ, we beat the teams we were playing by ALOT!! We won most of our games by more than 5 goals. So, going to Toronto for the championships was a huge test for us. We played well, but we fell short in our second and third games, losing both 4-2. That meant we didn't move on, and we were out of the tournament. All in all, it was an awesome experience. It was kind of funny to see the expressions of the guys on the other teams when they saw me playing goalie for my team. Keep in mind this is a men's league, and there are a few women but none of them play goalie. So, watching the other teams before the game was kind of funny. And it was even better when they came over after the game and said that I played well!

On sunday, we ended up leaving early and stopping off at Niagara Falls for awhile. We visited the US side of the falls, and walked around there for awhile. What an awesome sight the falls are!!! We had lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe and then started to head home, getting home at about 8:30pm. What a LONG weekend!!

Not much training to report on this week. I decided to take the week off from running and start again this sunday. My official marathon training plan doesn't begin until September, but my goal for the summer months is to build up my training mileage and do a lot of speed work to work on my speed. We will see how that goes!!

Ok, gotta get back to watching the hockey game, hopefully, the DUcks will win it all tonight!!

I didn't realize it wasn't an all women's team you played on. Congratulations on your win in the first game. And I'm glad you enjoyed the tournament. I've never really played on a team that was serious enough to go to a tournament. I used to play softball but they were just friendly games. Now my DD was on a synchro skating team for years and we traveled all over Canada for that. So I lived vicariously through her.
The Falls are awesome. Though I prefer smaller falls like the ones in Leitchworth Park New York. Less noise and less people. I've been to Leitchworth more often than Niagra.
I start my 1/2 marathon training at the end of June. I'm really starting to understand the necessity of the training period. I did almost 13 K the other day and honestly it was about all I could do to finish it. And I need to do 21K for the half marathon. It wasn't pain, more fatigue in my muscles. Its really not just a walk in the park.

Sounds like you had a great time in Toronto!:thumbsup2 Congratulations go out to your team on a great season!:cheer2:

Did the Ducks win last night?

Hope you have a great day today!:goodvibes

Hi Laurie! Wow...your trip to Toronto sounds great! Congrats to your team! You must have been SO excited...really awesome!!! :thumbsup2

Good luck jumping back into the running next week :). Sometimes it's great to take some time off....allow your body to recharge and get psyched up for the training to train phase. Speed sounds great. I wish I had the motivation to do it...but I really haven't trained doing speed work yet. I'm so afraid of injury now that I think it keeps me from pushing too much.

Have a great weekend! And again...congrats!!!!
