Laurie's journal - Atkins plan (comments welcome)

I hope you feel better tomorrow Laurie. With that cold weather, maybe you should stay in. Maybe you can have hubby make you some homemade chicken soup. Take care Laurie.:D

laurie, sleep is definitely more important than getting pneumonia. like i said before, don't worry about getting in working out while you're sick. your body needs a chance to recover. i'm sorry that you're still feeling yucky. just try to take it easy today, even though you went into work. maybe you could go home early if you're not feeling better later? either way, just promise to take it easy. i hope you feel better :sunny:

Laurie, listen to your DH - he's right! You need to rest and recuperate. Your body is already working extra hard to fight your illness - you do not need to stress it out any more by exercising. Please wait until you're feeling better.

I second Marcia's idea - let your sweet DH make you some chicken soup!!

I hope you are resting comfortably and giving your body a chance to heal itself. :sunny:

Laurie,

Listen to your body. If you aren't feeling well, rest. It takes a tremendous amount of energy to recover from an illness. Take your time and pamper yourself.

I wanted to thank you for your reply to my journal. You really helped me through a rough patch. Thank you again.

Beth

Day 59 menu: breakfast - low-carb roll & cottage cheese; snack - 1 oz almonds, diet rite; lunch - romaine salad w/bleu cheese dressing and crumbles, tomato & egg; dinner - green beans w/butter & BBQ chicken breast; diet rite; lots of water.

Still seeing my temp rise from "normal" first thing in the am to 99.9 at the end of the day. Makes for trying to do a good job at work difficult. I have a trainee today so maybe I won't be so tired.

Exercise: still 0.

Laurie, I hope you get some time to rest this weekend. Here's a gentle  and some extra healing :wizard: pixie dust.

Keep drinking your water and letting your body fix itself up - I'm sure you'll be good as new in no time! :sunny:

Laurie,

I'll second Doe's, get some rest this weekend. I looked back at your journal, and I saw you have had a recent physical. I won't suggest a trip to the doctor then. How about a trip to Florida? Hmm.

Actually, I'm going to suggest you increase your carbs for the next 3 days. I know you don't want to stall your weight loss. I'm suggesting an extra 10-20 carbs a day. That seems huge doesn't it? Here's my rationale.. Studies have shown that it takes a tremendous amount of enegy to fight off illness. Glucose/cards are the easiest energy source for your body to use. By being on a low carb diet, you are resticting glucose, therefore reducing your body's easy energy. When you are ill, everything takes more energy to do. By having the glucose you might get better more quickly, and then you would be able to get back into the exercise routine. Radical, I know, but consider it. DH got the flu during induction. Usually he sleeps for 24 hours and is fine the next day. He was sick for days. I made hime increase his carbs for 2 days. He was better in 12 hours. I know what works for one person might not work for everyone. I am not a doctor either. It's just something to think about.

I hope you feel better soon.
Beth

I'll second everything that's been offered so far and sending you a  and some :wizard: pd Harry Potter style:)

laurie, are you feeling any better today? i sure hope so! if not, i hope you are continuing to take good care of yourself to make sure you get rid of this icky sickness as soon as possible.

hope you have a great day today :sunny:

Oh wow, I haven't had the chance to get online over the weekend and I just have to say how touched I am to hear such kind words from all of you. I am starting to feel much better - now it's just a cold and everyone knows a cold takes two weeks to disappear. DH is now starting to see the sign though.

On Friday, I was at work for 2 hours and then we had an extra person scheduled (besides the trainee) for the 2-10:30pm shift. So I called my boss and left him a message to let him know we had the issue and asked what to do about it (he was out ill as well). No call back, so I made an "executive decision" since I have the sick leave to head home. Our control room is usually very cold - but lately it's been overly warm and with my low-grade temp it was all that I could do not to be nauseous.

No sooner that I got home than I got a call to fill-in for the Kings broadcast vs the Sonic for Saturday evening. I have to have permission to work for another broadcaster besides FOX Sports and the scheduled said he'd make the call and beg for me. (Freelance pays twice what I normally make for a news shift and the new permission policy is costing us about $1,000-2,000/month - not good with DH out of work.)

Menu for Friday: low-carb roll & cottage cheese, ham & green beans, deviled eggs, salami, not-enough water, popcorn late - was really really craving it. I expected the popcorn (with I shared with DH and Tilda - 5 yr old female cat) to give me the carb jitters, but it didn't.

Saturday - I had deviled eggs for breakfast and DH made me some low-carb wraps with ham, turkey & cheese to take with me. I also took some oz. packages of macadamias and almonds. Working in a remote truck, a graphics operator doesn't get much of a break from starting at 1pm until after the game is over. I only got to one on the wraps and the nuts with diet rite and water until after the game. I had the other wrap when I got home with more water.

Sunday - we went over to a good friends to watch the Super Bowl. I had an oz. of macadamias on the way. Our friend John has been working with a nutritionist - "low cal, low fat, no fun" as he puts it. It's hard for him to stay motivated and difficult to get much exercise with his schedule. So he watching our progress with Atkins very carefully. He decided to give it a try for Super Bowl Sunday. He had bought a tray of Costco meats and cheese for snacking. We brough the makings for spaghetti squash alfredo with shrimp and we made a green salad. He only had low-fat salad dressing so I chose the least of the carbs for my salad - a litehouse bleu cheese w/3 g of carbs/2 Tbls. John was impressed that he wasn't hungry at all a couple hours after dinner (like normal).

Monday - going up to my parents for dinner (DH and my dad play basketball).

No exercise over the weekend - DH and I did our walk this morning (Monday).

Weigh-in (against DH's wishes, so don't tell him): 172 lbs (down 8 from Atkins induction).

Laurie, I'm so happy to hear you're feeling better! :sunny: You stayed on plan through all that, even with your interesting work situation (a remote truck?? - I've seen pics of those during NASCAR races - looks cramped!)

Congrats on the 8 pounds gone that you're not supposed to know about yet ;) (I won't tell DH!).

I'm glad you're feeling better. I think we should all get residuals for people we convert to low-carb. WooHoo... 8 pounds. Way to go. Don't overdo Laurie, you are still recovering. Have fun with your parents tonight.
Beth

hey laurie, i am so glad that you are feeling a bit better! and even with all that you had to do this weekend, you did a great job staying on plan. and 8 pounds! that is so wonderful! congratulations! hope you continue down the road to recovery from that cold. have a great day today :sunny:

Monday: cottage cheese for breakfast - nuts for a snack, up to my parents for dinner. My mom is really making an effort to find low-carb options for dinner (and hoping my father will make a committment to try Atkins or South Beach or Dr. Phil..."just pick one"). We had scallops and shrimp with butter & garlic over broccoli, green beans, water chestnuts & mushrooms. She also had some sliced french bread which my dad only had 2 slices instead of half the loaf. DH and I had a low-carb roll each before bed.

Tuesday: breakfast - low-carb roll; snacks crab-stuffed mushrooms, cheese & salami; lunch - Atkins vanila shake; dinner - mixed green salad w/bleu cheese dressing, parmasan, mushrooms, tomato & artichoke hearts and flank steak. Diet rite and lots of water.

Exercise: Monday - walk with DH, Tuesday - pilates when I get home from work

My cold is now down to a cough - but a pretty nasty cough at that. DH started feeling bad on Monday and is not a happy camper at home tonight. Only the cats are happy about the need for bedrest - they love to cuddle with us and each other.

Doreen: yes, a remote truck can be pretty cramped and ice cold to work in. I really like doing events in the field - a lot more exciting than day-to-day in the studio.

Beth and Marcia: thanks again for checking up on me. I sure wish the weight would start to come off - its a little frustrating that I've only lost 8 lbs in 2 months, when in 1999 I lost 30 in less than the same amount of time. I guess when it finally leaves, I'll be all the more careful about letting it creep back on!

glad you're feeling better and great news on those missing 8 pounds :)

laurie, that's funny about your dad "just pick one". haha, there are just too many good options, how can you expect him to make up his mind :p ? haha, i know not really, i'm just playing along with him. that's really great that your mom is so supportive and making food that you can eat.

hope you have a great day today :sunny:

Laurie, tell your mom to just pick a plan for your dad and start feeding him that way without even telling him!! :teeth: What he doesn't know won't hurt him!

Sorry that the weight isn't coming off as quickly as you'd like. It can be soooo frustrating! At least you're feeding your body healthier food - that counts for something, right?? Glad to hear your cold is on the way out, though! Now you'll have the strength to baby DH while he gets through it.

I'll take all our colds with me to Florida and dump them on some unsuspecting natives enjoying 80 degree sunny weather!! :p

Hi Laurie,
I'm glad your feeling better. Here's some pixie dust :wizard:for patience. If DH gets sick, I'm sure you'll need it.

Beth
