Laurs and Andy tackle the Big Apple Day 5

Wednesday 8 August 2007
We got up at 8.30 am and had breakfast in the hotel as usual. I had a big sulk because they had run out of Lucky Charms, and I had to have cinnamon toast crunch cereal instead.
We set out from the hotel at 10.15 am for our trip up the Empire State Building. We stopped at Duane Reade for a wild cherry pepsi (yum) on the way.
What really struck us about the ESB was how disorganised it was in comparison with the Rockefeller Center where we had been a couple of days ago. On the whole there seemed to be more of a were the Empire State Building so we can get away with anything attitude. There were many different queues to stand in (and not just for the obligatory security checks) and I do remember muttering something about not queuing this much at Disney.
Finally, we made it up to the viewing platform. After experiencing the Rockefeller I was feeling a bit more confident, so made it to the edge and even looked properly down a few times. I had a few hairy moments when I saw people sticking their cameras between the wires to take pictures, and my brain couldnt compute that if their camera fell they werent going to follow. The other thing I didnt like was the graffiti covering almost every surface, it just seemed like such a shame.
We spotted Macys and the rooftop terrace of our hotel.
After walking around a couple of times taking photos, we went into the shop where we got a King Kong/ESB magnet for my brother, a wine stopper for Andys dad, an ESB clip for our new noticeboard in the kitchen, and a Betty Boop pen for me (she is dressed as the Statue of Liberty).
We had booked tickets for the Skyride (meant to stress again the importance of this we saved at least one if not two more times of queuing by doing this) so we made our way to the theatre for that. It is sort of like Soarin (but not as good) and the film shows you flying over New York and is narrated by Kevin Bacon. It does move a little but isnt at all scary. We enjoyed it, but both felt that it was far too short especially with its $20 price tag.
When we left the Empire State, we headed to Subway for lunch. Stressful experience, I find Subway stressful in this country and in NY with more choices and quicker service my head was positively spinning after ordering a sandwich. Anyway, the sandwiches were very nice. I had tuna and Andy had steak and cheese, with some cool ranch doritos and sprite.
Andy had promised me a trip and treats from Victorias Secret for being brave going up tall buildings, so we headed there next. I had a very successful trip and came out with 10 pairs of knickers (sorry, panties but we both giggled every time someone said that), a soft grey Pink love university t-shirt, some Amber Romance shower gel and Pink body lotion all for around £50. I was very pleased with my purchases and sashayed back to the hotel with my cute pink bag to deposit it in the room.
Once out again we took the subway to Times Square, and transferred to Grand Central Station. We were both amazed by how beautiful the building was, both inside and out, and I loved the paintings on the ceiling. It looks just like it does in one of my favourite films, Madagascar!
From Grand Central we walked to the Chrysler Building and took some pics.
We went back and took the subway to Madison Square Garden via Times Square. There was a newscaster outside doing a broadcast, but we couldnt figure out what it was for.
After a couple of photos, we walked back in the direction of the hotel. We stopped in at H & M (imho, much better than in England) where Andy got a jumper and a pair of combats, and I got a grey and white striped vest for a bargainiferous $4.90!
We also called in at the Manhattan Mall to go into Steve and Barrys, as an American friend had told me about the new Sarah Jessica Parker range, Bitten. Everything in the collection is $20 or less that includes bags and shoes! I got a very cute and comfortable pair of combats, feeling ridiculously pleased that in America a size 8 is big on me!
We went back to the hotel, watched the Simpsons and took showers. We took the subway to Times Square and went to the Hard Rock Café for tea. We booked in and had to wait around 20 minutes for a table not exactly a hardship when there was great music to listen to and a circular leather seat so huge I could have laid on it had I wanted to.
Our male server was very attentive (more to Andy than me, so I teased him about having an admirer) and we had drinks ordered quickly. Andy had a purple haze cocktail and I had a bahama mama. I have heard so much about them, especially from Mandy and thank you, because I loved it! Andy had pork with mash and broccoli, and I had a cajun chicken sandwich with cheese and chorizo sausage and seasoned fries. It was very nice except for the sausage which was fatty and nasty! We forced down a slice of chocolate cake between us for dessert.
We visited the shop after eating where Andy bought a t-shirt, and I got Statue of Liberty Hard Rock pins for myself and my aforementioned American friend. We also joined the All Access programme which entitles you to priority seatings, hotel upgrades and discounts. It came with limited edition pins and lanyards each too.
Andy took some pics of Times Square at night. We especially liked this one as neither of us could quite believe that this was the actual police station!
By the time we got back to the hotel it was too late to go to the bar so we went to the mini bar instead beer for Andy and a vodka and coke for me. Bed was around 1 am.
