maybe someone here has an idea

My SIL just called me to ask me and i had no idea but i told her i would put it out to you to see if you all had one

her husbands t shirts for work are all getting stained in the arm pit area
they are actually bleaching out which is only part of the problem no matter how many times she washes them the armpit area is hard

her DH can only use a certain deodorant due to allergies i am wondering if it is from that

any ideas on how to "soften" these up and get them clean
she has soaked them for hours even overnight

I said throw them out and start over but she can't they are his work shirts and his boss won't order any new till next summer

so any ideas??

The bleaching is from the salt in the sweat in the arm pit area and so is the hardness use a water softener in the water. and maybe put soap directly on the arm pit area. Also wash them as soon as her gets in.

a water softener??
does she find that in the laundry area or where???

she is willing to try anything to try and save these shirts

say yellow to my little friend

Though more visible on white tops, pit stains can also appear on different colored tops. Here are some things you can do to get rid of and avoid them in the first place.
Follow instructions
First and foremost, always follow the cleaning instructions on your garment's label.

Wash right away
Timing is everything, so try to wash your clothes as soon as you can, especially after sweating excessively. For example, don't let your sweat-drenched T-shirts linger in your gym bag for days, and always wash your white business shirts regularly. Sweat contains salt that will erode your clothes in no time.

Pre-treat
Pre-treating your shirt's armpit area will definitely aid the stain-removal process. Put undiluted laundry detergent directly on the yellowish area and launder immediately. Remember that it's worth paying more for higher quality laundry detergent. Or maybe you should just consult a physician to get your eccrine and apocrine glands examined.

Other quick tips
Make your whites whiter by bleaching in warm water or by adding 1/4 cup of baking soda to your laundry.

Remember to remove the stains as much as possible before placing the item in the dryer; drying will only make your stains more permanent.

Avoid deodorants and antiperspirants with acidic solutions and aluminum chloride.

Finally, if your "pits" are deeply coated, don't even bother trying; you're better off throwing out the T-shirt and replacing it. If this is a common occurrence, consider spending less on your Ts.

removing stains - general rules

Before learning how to remove specific stains, here are some guidelines to help you eliminate stains in general.
- Always try to remove the stain as quickly as possible before it sets in.

- Always test your stain-removal technique on less visible areas of the garment.

- Never rub. Instead, blot the stain gently with a cloth and liquid.

- Keep in mind that in order to eliminate a stain effectively, you might need to use more than one technique.

- Some types of stains, like permanent ink, are extremely stubborn and not worth removing. In that case, consult a professional cleaner or simply throw out the article and replace it.

She could also try to change his deodorant. I was having the same problem with my husband's shirts. I make sure I buy him a antipersperant/deodordant. Speedstick 24/7 is a good one. It won't help the shirts now but will in the future

My dad and I have this problem. I've just accepted it. I sweat, the Dr. wouldn't give me DrySol or anything like that, I'm trying certain dry, but I keep forgetting to put it on at night.

Tell her to use one of the "Oxy" sprays on it...OxyClean, OxyMagic...it doesn't matter which one.

DH's shirts were doing this. Now I give the pits and collar a spray of Oxy, let them sir 5-10 minutes & wash as usual. They have been coming out fine.

I would also suggest having him wear a white t-shirt under his work shirts. That will help contain the perspiration. DH can't wear any deodorant with antiperspirant in it or he breaks out in a nasty rash so we have a similar problem.

That's what I was going to say. Don't use anti-perspirant, use a deodorant.

Anti-perspirant has zinc or aluminum or some other type of mineral that's causing the stains.

That has to be one of the dumber things I've heard. It's the sweat that's causing the stains, not the anti-persperant. If you take that away, the sweating will only get worse, making the stains worse. Where is your rational here? :confused3

not so sure abou that one...over the summer I was using Mitchum and all my light colored shirts got pit stains on them. I have never had this problem before and now that I have stopped using the Mitchum, the pit stains stopped too. I think it definitely can be the type of deoderant/anti-perspirant that you use.

Do you find this stuff in the laundry detergent aisle?
