Late to this whole MP3 thing...

I am late 30's and got my first MP3 player, an Ipod Nano as a gift- it is super cute but I have never been much of a music lover. I mean I like listening to the radio and know the words to various songs but could never tell you the artist singing or album title or whatever. My husband finds it a source of constant amusement to ask me who is singing whatever song - just because he knows my guess will be way way off. I once confused Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond in a conversation with a coworker...

So I really have no idea what to do with this Nano - DH said he will set up for me but I don't really like all the same music he does - he was more 80's hair band and rap music and I was more 80's pop or top-40 or whatever.

I am excited because it says I can listen to FM radio with my Nano....but I realize that isn't really the point of the thing...

Can anyone help me embrace the MP3 and get me excited to have one? Or maybe give me some tips on setting it up - I mean I heard of Itunes and given Itunes gift cards but beyond that I am clueless.

It is ok to laugh...I know I'm a dork and I'm ok with that....

Super easy to set up. You do need to load Itunes (the software) and create an Itunes (store) account. This whole business might take up to 1/2 hour depending on if you had Itunes before on a machine and the speed of your machine.

As for getting songs, there are many ways: YOu could purchase some from the Itunes store (remember there are free ones on the store). There is also other vendors such as Amazon. Amazon does have a decent free song selection --good Amazon free MP3 downloads. All your Amazon stuff can get import into Itunes if you click the box to "import into Itunes"-- if you don't it will go into another folder and you will have to transfer the songs over. (I did this yesterday) There are other 3rd party vendors-- but they may be subject to piracy and can be virus laden.

You could also take some of your CDs and import either the whole CD or selected songs into Itunes. I also check out CDS from the library and pick out a few songs and put it on Itunes.

Thank you Cindy...my DH just keeps telling me..."I'll take care of it" and I would actually prefer to learn how to use my new toy! I am going to go check out free songs on amazon now and I need to see if DH downloaded itunes onto my laptop - he was doing something last night on my laptop so I'll investigate...

I have had an ipod for about 4 years. I hardly ever listen to music on it... I mostly listen to Disney podcasts (which are free). I especially like the DISunplugged.

Yay! Podcasts are great to listen to; they're about all I listen to when I'm training for the WDW half-marathon (makes the miles go by much faster if I have something to concentrate on). WDW Today is my personal favorite.

If you're a walker or runner, the 5th-generation iPod nano (which is the one you got) also has a built-in pedometer, which is kinda cool. You can also either get a simple AUX cable (if you have an AUX input in your car) or something a little more complex like a dock that will charge your iPod and play it at the same time, and then you can take your music with you in the car instead of having to deal with stacks of CDs.

Even though you say you're not a huge music person now, you might find that changing with your new toy. I got my first iPod about 6 years ago and pretty much can't function without one now. I have a nano that mainly just gets used in the car and an iPhone that gets used for everything else, as well as various and sundry other models that I've given to friends and family. I converted everyone!

I love my IPOD, I too use it mostly to listen to my disney podcasts, but also have begun to use it at work. I purchased a docking speaker system to put on my desk and now listen to music while I am at work. Once it is set up, as Cindy B said, it is super easy.
