Late flight home--what to do with luggage?

My family of 5 will be on the Wonder May 23rd cruise, which will return to Port Canaveral on 05/26.

Our flight home doesn't leave until 4:15 (we wanted to avoid the Indy 500 traffic nightmare when we got home).

It is my understanding that Delta is still not checking bags at Port Canaveral. Not being seasoned travelers, I am not sure how early we can check our baggage at the airport. Will we have to drag our baggage around for hours?

Welcome to the DIS!!!! We just had the same problem last Saturday. We disembarked the Magic on 3/2 and our flight was not until 7:45 pm. We also were flying Delta. We solved the problem by catching the Avis/Radisson shuttle from the ship to the Avis location and renting a car for the day. We rented a min-van and it onlycost about $60 for the day. We went to downtown Disney and MGM for the day and then headed for the airport about 4:00. We asked and were able to be put on an earlier flight home. It all worked out well and we had the van to keep our luggage in when we were sightseeing.

I did reserve the car before the cruise because the same day rates might be higher.

Ditto. We are renting a car for one-day from Avis. Since there are only 2 of us - we were able to rent a small car for about $50. Our flight doesn't leave until after 7:00 p.m., so we plan to visit the MK (maybe) or Downtown Disney on that day.

The car rental is cheaper than the transfers and gives us a place to store our luggage!

Thanks for your suggestions-I appreciate the help. Lets keep hoping Delta will start accepting baggage at the docks before our trip!

It is highly doubtful Delta will start the check-in. When we sailed 2/9/2002 we took our luggage (the porter did for $1.00/bag) to the DCL bus and then at the airport they had checkin right off the bus. We checked in and roamed around from around 10:30 am to our 1:50 pm flight. Not so bad but since you're must later - rent the car and enjoy the end of your trip!

We just got back from our cruise last Saturday (Mar 2) and also didn't have a flight until around 4pm. We flew Delta and they wouldn't let us check our bags in until 4 hours before the flight. We ended up just hanging out in the airport all day, which wasn't too bad because there are lots of stores and restaurants.

Does anyone know if American Airlines lets you check your luggage at Port? I heard that they do, but with 9-11 maybe things have changed. If not, we'll be lugging our luggage around until our 4:30 flight.

Yes, American has a luggage check-in desk at the DCL terminal.
