Hi! well I have had to cancel our wdw holiday this year however the TA is allowing us to change the date till next year..the only problem for us with doing that is it has to be the same season, so we have to go before October when I was hoping to go!
So this only leaves us with August, however I am worried about crowds, and the sun being to hot for my dd who will be 5....and the weather in general, Showers, storms, hurricanes etc.

We can not go earlier in the year as we are going to California in Easter, I would rather not go in September as this would mean taking my dd out of school when she will be settling in with a new teacher..routines etc.

So are options are Cancel and re book of October and pay a another deposit. however we could stay in cheaper accommodation to make up for the loss.
We had original booked PORS.

Go in August in which the deposit will already be paid? The deposit is £420. we were thinking upgrading to AKL as my daughter would it

Any experiences on August?

Last two weeks in August should be fine, the weather will be hot but with the usual precautions, (drinking lots of water, going into the air-conditioned shops, etc) will be manageable. The last two weeks of August usually see the Americans winding down so the parks start to get a little 'less busy' than the main part of the summer. I usually go around September just so that the parks are even less packed and of course it is cheaper to go then due to the kids being back at school. As for hurricanes, well, you run the risk of those throughout the hurricane season, was there for Jeanne and it didn't spoil my holiday.

I wouldn't entertain losing my deposit if it was at all possible!

Hi there,

We mostly travel in August and as far as school holiday times go, we like the last 2 weeks in August :)

It is extremely hot and humid. There is often an a very short but heavy rainstorm at 2pm ish which is a relief as it clears the air :thumbsup2 We get around this by drinking constantly and doing air con attractions quite regularly.

On the plus sides, the parks are relatively quiet in the second half of August and the evenings are wonderfully balmy and beautiful. Perfect for late night swimming :)

I am not saying I would choose to go in August, but within the confines of the school holidays, I really like it :)

HTH

We have been for the last two weks in August and the crowds level was quite good - most US schools go back before the middle of August :)

It is hot and humid, but only outside :)
Pace yourselves, get to the parks early and then take an early afternoon rest, either in your room or by the pool.
Take advantage of the A/C in shops and indoor attractions to stay out of the heat.
Drink plenty of water.

Be prepared for a rain! There is usually a thunderstorm around mid to late afternoon. This should only last for an hour or two and then clear away. After 20 minutes you wouldn't know it had rained at all :)

We have thought about going for the last two weeks of August, but have always decided against it because we thought that the weather would be unbearable for our DD's (12, 8). We figure that when our youngest DD gets a bit older we will go then. Personally I would lose the deposit and go at a time when I thought that we as a family would get the most enjoyment out of the parks. For me it would not make sense to save £420 and perhaps not enjoy our holiday as much because our DD's were flagging because of the heat!

Hope that whatever you decide works out well for you! :goodvibes

My DDs have been going in August since the age of 2 Catherine, and I have to say they cope far better with the heat than I do :teeth: We get them a little whirly fan thing and make sure they stay hydrated and the heat bothers them not a jot.

We are restricted to school holidays too and now have to go August also.

As others have said the crowds from the middle of the month onwards are not too bad at all - which is a big plus.
The weather is very hot and it does take a few days to adjust, in a way we are lucky because as we go each year there is not the need to rush around as much so we just pace ourselves around the parks, and getting there early in the morning is vital if you want to miss the worst of the heat.

I must admit we do like the weather being nice and sunny, would certainly rather it be hot than on the chilly side (like it was last March) - however, naturally as it's 90 degrees or so you do have to be careful.

If I had to choose when to go, ideally October would be my first choice , a lot of us who go in August do so because we have to go then...but it doesn't stop us having a fab time, and there are other times of the year that are much busier crowd-wise.

I would never put anyone off going in August, you cannot stress enough how much an advantage it is when the parks are quieter - certainly if you take July for example when it is even hotter and very crowded too.

We'd always visited Florida during May, June or October until last August. As an Admin Officer at a school I am now stuck with school holidays, so it was August or nothing since we were there for 18 days.

Whilst, like Miffy, it's not a time we would immediately choose to go, it certainly hasn't put us off. In fact our friends, who we have just returned from California with, want us to go with them to Florida next August for three weeks, so it can't have been that bad ;)

It IS very hot and extremely humid, but just drink loads of water, carry a water bottle around the parks (each person should have their own) and make frequent trips indoors for the A/C.

We went on 8th August last year, but spent our first 10 nights down in Fort Myers. By the time we'd gotten to Orlando the crowd levels were ok; certainly not the best we've ever had, but manageable. Just check out all the lists of "best days", they are very useful.

Just go and enjoy yourselves :cool1:

hi :wave2: Thanks for your good advice :goodvibes

so if we go to the parks in the morning leave in the afternoon and go back in the evening we should be okay? we will be onsite..so we will still get disney at the hotel!

Having a 5 yo we have no plans on trying it all, it is just a quick trip away as California is our main holiday for 07., and I really want to go to wdw! we will do a big wdw holiday 08 when dd older.

my dd will be okay in a buggy if it gets to hot, we can than attach a parasol to it and she will be in the shade. I presume that lots of kids this age use a buggy at wdw?

Definitely aim to get there early yes, it's a good idea to get a few hours under your belt before it gets too hot , whether you leave at lunchtime or early afternoon is up to you really. Just see how you feel on the days in question.
Some of the parks are very good for an evening stroll, so it's a popular idea to go to say Magic Kingdom in the morning, then after a few hours rest, say visit EPCOT or MGM for eg in the evening.

Kid's of all ages use a buggy or stroller around the parks, our son is 8 and we still use one (although he is autistic), however it is common for children of his age to use a stroller - it is a lot to ask of children to walk around the theme parks, especially in the summer.

We went to WDW last August, going again this August, as every one says it is hot but get up early, take a rest midday and you will have a great time.
