Is anyone apprehensive about scheduling a DVC trip in the last month of their use year? I keep thinking "what if" we have to cancel within the 30 days. We would basically lose those points.
We have an August Use Year, and we vacation in July every year (sometimes WDW, sometimes HHI). When we bought in, we did not realize the purpose of the UY. We have children, so we are tied to Spring Break and Summer vacations. We don't worry however. We've never cancelled a vacation yet! Besides, our vacation patterns will change once our kids are off to college.
We have a March UY, and the last month we schedule is Dec. If we had to cancel, we think we would be able to book somewhere in Jan/Feb as there are several weeks that aren't that busy.
I wouldn't want to book anything in Feb, since if I had to cancel my options would be extremely limited.
I understand your apprehension and I wouldnt do it if you think you'll end up cancelling! But if you (and your family) never cancel your trips then do it!
We purchased in June 1993 and got a June UY because that's what they were selling.
We vacation in May almost every year.
In 15 years of membership, we've never had to cancel a vacation. Think of it this way, it's a good incentive not to postpone your vacation.
If it's a family emergency, DVC may be willing to let someone cancel and then bank the points. I would think if there's a waiting list for the villa, so the unit wouldn't go unused, they'd be more able to do that.
We have a March use year and frequently travel December and January. In more than 11 years, we have never had to cancel a reservation late enough to lose it. If you are in the habit of cancelling late, then you should look for a different use year. If not, don't worry about it, because the number of times it will be a problem are probably VERY minimal.

I was wondering about this. We normally don't cancel vacations. I was basically concerned if we would HAVE to, like for an emergency. I am always thinking about the "what ifs", probably too much.
Quite frankly, if you have to cancel in the last 30 days, it doesn't really matter what your use year it. The points become restricted and are very hard to use anyway, particularly for those of us who have to fly.
Our April UY doesn't work well for our Feb vacations either. I've borrowed points both for last year and this year's trip. Guess if we had to cancel, I'd try hard to have one of our adult children use the points. but barring something catastrophic, we know we're heading to Vero Beach in Feb 09 -- no ifs, ands, or buts...
