It looks like we'll be going either at the end of the month or the first few weeks of next month. I'm used to planning for WDW, so this seems scary last minute. What do I need to do/get together for this trip? Is it as simple as hotel, tickets, and transport there?

Yes, plus spend a little time on universalorlando.com and the food sticky on this board. I recommend staying on site to get Express Pass, but that is an option you need to weigh along with your budget. Nothing to worry about, it's not WDW. Always know your maps, but know you can leave either of the parks and get to CityWalk or the other park in less than 5 minutes, or ride the train if you have park to park.

i booked my room for first weekend of february about 19 days ago.
plan to wing it when i am there as i spent 15 days at UO in october last year.

first thing you need to do is book your room.
if you have an ap, the discount is good for early february.
i snagged one easily as first week of feb is not a busy time.

you can book private car service days out from your vacation.
or if you plan to rent a car, do that soon.

tickets you can buy on line at UO and pick up at the kiosk machines once there.
it takes 24 hours for them to be processed.

use the website to get an idea of the park and what is located where.

there.
all done with planning........

Download the app on your phone for maps, wait times, etc. If you aren't getting the express pass(either through staying at one of the 3 hotels that offer it or buying seperately), most of the main rides have single rider lines. You can buy it while there if you want to wait to see how crowds are that day. Like WDW be there early for RD(unless you have early entry at one of the main hotels to do Harry Potter) and do main rides early for shorter lines. Water rides can get you soaked, so beware. You need park-to- park tickets if you want to be able to switch during the day(right next to each other)and if you want to take the train ride between the two Harry Potter areas. This site has a cool chart describing the rides w/comparison to Disney rides: http://wdwprepschool.com/a-disney-world-freaks-guide-to-universal-orlando/
