Las Vegas

I agree with staying midstrip. I would stay ON the strip, however. If you go midweek, you can get some fantastic deals (mon-thurs).
Our last stay was at Barbary Coast. It is a small casino, right next to Flamingo. We LOVE it there. Very NICE BIG ROOMS with intimate feel. We played a lot of slots (and won enough to keep going ;) ). They do not have a pool though, so if you are wanting swimming, this would not be the place to stay.

Go to each casino's website and see what kind of deals you can get.
You can either do it yourself or go thru travel agent. I always book myself, but I enjoy doing it.
Where are you from? Airfare is always the big ticket item for us as we are in the midwest and not located near a major airport.

We LOVE Vegas. Can't wait to go back.

Allegiant air usually has cheapo direct flights to Vegas, and their air/hotel packages can be a good deal as well. the bad part is they only fly once a day and not every day of the week.

Part of where to stay is what you like to do - if you are hang out at the pool and around the hotel people, then room size/amenities is very important. if you are go go go out and about all night, then a room is just a place to crash and take a shower.

Bally's has good size rooms, is center strip, but is not themed/glitzy. Sometimes their room rates are more expensive than the 5* places, which amuses me to no end. It's worth it to stay there only if the room is cheap. Like $100 or less a night cheap. I wouldn't recommend Caesar's to you if you are under 30. I'm 41 and it felt stuffy to me. DH had a conference there and the room was very nice, but the casino seemed to cater to an older crowd. the pro's to Caesar's are location, location, location and the Forum shops/restaurants.

I really liked the Alladin - had more moderately priced shopping than either the Forum Shops or the Venetian, the casino wasn't smoky. Our room was tiny, had very little extra floor space, but the bathroom was awesome! Oversized soaking tub and big walkin shower. It's a little far down the strip for my taste though, I either want to be up a couple blocks or down by MGM/NYNY area. The Monte Carlo has the same problem. Now that the tram to the Bellagio is no more, it's got a location issue.

Have a great time, there is so much to do, and it's a fun town to kick back and relax in.

You really do get the best deals by signing up on the hotel websites. I used to be signed up with some (with an old email) and got bombarded with good specials. I always like Treasure Island and The Mirage. Good mid-strip location. The MGM Grand was too big for my taste (I was also there the first month they opened for a convention and they just didn't have their act together). Caesar's is fun in a Las Vegas tacky sort of way. The Excalibur and Circus/Circus hotels were more budget hotels, but not uncomfortable in any way.

We have stayed at Bally's twice. The first time, I think we got a free upgrade because we were in a newly remodeled room and it was huge and GORGEOUS! We went in April that year. Then the next yr we went in July. We got put in a CRAPPY looking room right out of the 80's ICK!!! I will not go back to Bally's again. It was expensive for THAT kind of room and a lot of people say they do not care about thier rooms in Vegas but I CARE. I did like the location tho. It is on the monorail. Very nice!! Helpful when you want to go up and down the strip. I think next time we may try Treasure Island...that looks like a happening place whenever we are there. We gamble at a little casino called O Sheas...its small and fun.

Have a great trip...I hope my dh and I get out there for my 30th in April!:cool1:

FWIW I have stayed at all the 5 star hotels on the srip rxcept The Hotel. My favorite hands down is Wynn. I flipping love that place.

Our last trip we stayed at Paris. Aside from being a very nice hotel, it is kinda in the middle of the strip. That is really nice when visiting other places.

Hi
My DH and I are going to Vegas in May. He has a conference at Ballys. It will be the first time there for us. Any suggestions on shows or day trips to take? We've been to the Grand Canyon, so I thought checking out the Hoover Dam or I think its called Red Rock Canyon might be something to do. The conference is for 4 days, but he'll skip the last day. Also, I can never get enough Disney, so would it be to out of the way to go to Disneyland? We've never been there before? Thanks!!

we leave january 14th for a girls trip.. woohoo

just go to the hotels website and sign up for their emails you get great deals from most of the hotels that way

Thank you for your response. We are from Chicago so we have a few airports to choose from. We would prefer to fly out of midway, but if it is a lot cheaper to go out of ohare we are willing to do that too.

You should be able to get some good flight deals then. We are from west central IL. Closest airport is either Peoria or Moline... So we have to deal with either connecting flights or drive to your fair city :)
(or we can get a good deal from Allegiant once in awhile!).
Good luck. I love to plan.

Its about a 4 hour drive (without traffic, including one brief stop for gas) from Vegas to Anaheim. A lot of people combine the trips, especially if you enjoy a good road trip. If you have the time, I say go! Check out the Disneyland board for more information. :thumbsup2 You really wouldn't be able to do it in a day, but if you had a couple days to add on at the end, I think it would be worth it.

With regards to shows, I love www.vegas.com for reviews. You can see all the different types offered. We just saw Phantom and the special effects were great! Also loved Mamma Mia! and We Will Rock You if you enjoy ABBA or Queen. Next show on our list is LOVE, the new Beatles show!

My first visit to LV was a couple months ago. We stayed at the Mirage and I thought it was absolutely beautiful. We shared a room with my sister and her DH 'cause at $350/nite, more than I wanted to spend for the 2 of us. The pool area was lovely, but water was not heated so no pool time for us. It's in a GREAT location - near Venetian, Bellagio, Wynn, Treasure Island(TI) so it was fun to wander around the other hotels.

If you do stay at TI or Mirage and want to watch the "Sirens of TI" show, there's a special viewing area right up front - sort of a VIP section, you can get into by showing your room key. Made me feel like a celebrity to be right up front of one of the pirate ships to watch the show!

We spent some time wandering around the lower end of the strip as we stayed our first night at The Tropicana - reminds me of old time Vegas and the room felt like it. Customer Service was MUCH better at the Mirage - you really do get what you pay for that way.

Most of the tours to places like Hoover Dam range from 4 to 8 hours hotel to hotel. They range from $50 to $190 depending on what you choose to do like a helicopter ride or paddling a kayak.

Red Rock tours range from 3.5 hours to 6 hours and cost between $60.00 and $150 again depending on how you want to see it.

There are a lot of things you can do on the strip almost every hotel has something you can see for free or pay a fee to do.

Aladdin has their Desert Passage Mall that is fun to wander around in.

Bellagio has their fountains, their Conservatory and their Art Gallery *it does cost to get in but usually they have the greatest art there* and right now they are featuring Ansel Adams the photographer.

Caesars Palace has the Forum Shops along with The Fall of Atlantis and Festival Fountain shows along with exotic cars.

Flamingo Hilton has a wildlife habitat complete with Flamingos and Penguins

Luxor has an IMAX theatre and 4D Pirate show along with a ride simulator

Mandalay Bay has a shark reef that is incredible

MGM has their lion exhibit and CBS Television City where you can screen new TV shows.

Mirage has the volcano outside, the White Tiger Habitat and the Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat

NY NY has their roller coaster *but beware it is VERY jerky and hurt my neck*

Paris has the Eiffel Tower you can go up in

Rio *which is just off strip* has the Masquerade Village

Stratosphere has rides on the top of it and they are VERY high!

Treasure Island has the Sirens of TI show

Venetian has an art gallery *though they are a lot stricter on how close you can get to the art than Bellagio*, Madame Tussauds Wax, Grand Canal Shops, and Gondola Rides.

Another thing you MUST know going there is to wear really good walking shoes and be prepared to WALK, WALK, WALK. Everything is truly a Mirage there and even after going there as many times as we have we still underestimate the distance between hotels. Also depending on when you go if it's summer*ish* make sure to drink a LOT of water! There is no moisture there and it gets really freakin hot!

They do now have the Monorail which makes getting up and down the strip a LOT easier but it's on the MGM side and people don't like having to cross the street to get to places like Bellagio or Caesars. There is a free monorail from Excalibur to Mandalay Bay.

As for going to Disney.....it is feasible to do it but it can take between 4 and 6 hours depending on the day and the time you leave. Disneyland is smaller than WDW and with the 2 parks being side by side you should be able to do them both in 2 days. Calif Adventure is neat but doesn't have near the attractions that DL has so honestly you can probably do that in 3/4 of a day. We really only like the Roller Coaster at Calif Adv. so maybe that's why it's easier for us to do that park for a shorter amt of time.

Feel free to PM me if you want to. We go at least 4 times a year if not more to Vegas *it's a 6 hour drive for us* and have FUN!

Thanks so much for this information. We'll stay for a few days after the conference, so I'll have to start planning this trip. There seems like there is so much to do that is free. I can't wait. Also, thanks Supercarrie for your info. You guys are great.:thumbsup2

Andrea,

The website you posted, www.travel2vegas.com saved me $125.00 on my upcoming trip. We are staying at the Luxor and got a great rate. On that website there was a promotion that wasn't showing up on the Luxor website. I called and got my reservation switched to the lower rate for a savings of $125. More money to gamble with!

Now for any of you who have done a Grand Canyon trip.....which company did you use? We want to do a helicpter tour that goes to the bottom of the canyon. Can anyone give a recommendation?

Thanks in advance,

Linda
