Hi everyone,

I've been looking at the various online printing options, and it looks like 20x30 is the largest "poster print" that can be made. We bought a 28x44 frame at Michael's last night, and I wanted to know if it would be possible to get a print that size somewhere that won't cost me a small fortune. I suppose I could just get a 20x30 and a smaller frame, but I thought it'd be nice to have a humongous pic above our fireplace...

thanks!

Well, you could always get one of these:

And let the 24"x36"ers roll! :teeth:

OMG, we would so LOVE to get that (seriously!)...I'm sure we will one of these days...seriously! LOL DH has a penchant for expensive toys and as he's dabbling in photography now, I know he's going to need a good large-format printer...right now we're looking at the ones that print super A3 photo (b/c my epson stylus color 1520 is quite old now...)

hmm, maybe my res is not good enough for super large prints...

Our Wolf Camera got a new Epson printer in last week that will do 24X36. Have yet to try it out.

anybody who needs their file to be enlarged to crazy **** print size, e-mail me at kelly.grannell@kiwihouse.com

I use onOne Genuine Fractals 4.1 PrintPro. Rather than you guys buying it, just let me do it. The success depends on the original file size and resolution.

thanks kelly! I was kind of bummed that it looked like I could only *maybe* print 20x30...

well apparently, according to Costco print center, the recommended res for 20x30 is 2272x1500 pixels. According to the image on my computer, its res is 3504x2336. Someone please tell me why costco says it's too small??

I have watched our Graphic Technology class use a program called Poster Creator to make any size poster you can imagine. I makes all segments 8.5x11" and you join them together. You can purchase it online.

I don't understand why Costco claim a 3.4 MP image can be printed to 20"x30". Definitely 6 MP can (borderline) and your 8 MP can be printed without interpolation at all.

Over on Dpreview a photog has a 5 MP sony printed at full billboard size. That is like 24 feet wide (about 8 meters). of course only billboard resolution but still, that is quite big!

I think they are having some issues other their site at checking the photo sizes. I uploaded a really huge photo (upsized in photoshop) and it still thinks it is too small. I think maybe their process for checking the resolution is broken. Maybe I'll submit a bug report and see if they fix it.

oh well, I think I'm going to give that other site a try...thanks all...

When it comes to COSTCO uploads, if making prints over 8x10 you must check the "LARGE PRINT" option. Leaving it on the default setting will compress pictures so much that prints over 8x10 may not be recommended, regardless of original resolution.

Options are at the bottom of the upload pop up.

8mp @ 12x18 would give you 194dpi, so you would be correct if you found a Costco with a minilab that prints at exactly 194dpi. But there are none that do(to my knowledge).

Most Costcos have upgraded to newer Noritsu mini labs, most with native DPIs of 280-320.

My local costcos uses the Noritsu 3111 series which prints at 320 DPI, If I send it a image with lower rez it will not magically start printing at that lower rez. All images will be resampled up or down to print exactly at 320(or native DPI depending on minilab).

In other words, a 8mp image would have to be interpolated to be printed at 12x18.

Ah.. their sneaky. I hadn't uploaded photos to Costco in a while and most of my uploading was before the neat little utility they created. I didn't even see that random option down at the bottom.

(And when I checked the photos I had previously uploaded before this they worked.)

somebody mentioned about billboard size. Depending on the location of the billboard and how far it's located from the viewer, I've seen billboards' print resolution as low as 16 dpi (yes, sixteen). Most billboards I've made for certain unnamed companies are usually around 64 to 72 dpi.
