Large Snakes at AKV?

It's Florida. I think you should expect snakes. We've seen snakes at BCV, SSR, DTD, Poly (although that one was dead on the black asphalt walkway), VWL, FW, and the walkway between BW & DHS. The one on the walkway between BW & DHS dropped from a tree on the far side of the canal into the water and then swam across the canal to the walkway where we were walking. Don't know what kind of snake it was...But it was HUGE!

Seen a couple dozen or so at WDW over many years; rarely would anyone see a rattler or cottonmouth (a/k/a water mocassin); much more common are harmless garters and the black racer (mentioned above and once saw one of those inside the building at BWV; they just picked it up and took it away) which is actually a very common snake in many northern states -- its the official state snake of Ohio. AKL isn't any different than other WDW resorts for potentially seeing one.

Can't say I ever say a snake at WDW, but I find it interesting that Ohio has an official state snake. :)

Whoa.. look at that... MANY states have official snakes/reptiles:

Although I've stayed at AKL/AKV several times, I've never seen a snake there. The only resort where I've seen a snake is at BCV, several times there as a matter of fact. And although I haven't seen one at OKW, a couple years ago when we were there, there was a group of people standing around in a circle one evening near whee we enterred our villa. After a few seconds, they dispersed and one person turned to another and asked "What kind of snake was that?" That was definitely close enough to seeing a snake for me. Don't ever go golfing after a rain, if you don't like snakes. DH has seen many on golf courses, and one time, after a heavy rain, LBV golf course had a sign with a "Snake Alert". As it was explained to DH, when it rains, the holes that the snakes traditionally use flood so they're often left to stay above ground. And he wonders why I don't golf?

I would actually be less worried in a SV room at AKV since you are not on ground floor. I think I would be more worried about OKW or THV with the vegetation and water nearby. I think common sense goes a long way. If you stay out of the bushes and waterways, you'll be fine. (At least that's what I tell myself since I hate snakes too).

:scared1: Is this creeping anyone else out?

Not really...Living in South Louisiana, I have had many encounters with snakes. Basically, like most animals, snakes will only mess with you if you mess with them first. I don't like to find them indoors, because they are not in their natural environment and they could be more aggressive since they may feel threatened. But, if I see one outdoors, I just go about my business and they go about their's.

Just when I thought it was safe . . . .

ok, one of these snake threads comes up every few months and usually someone posts a pic of some killer snake they've seen at WDW and it totally freaks me out . . . but I have never seen a snake at WDW. (Well, maybe in a display at Animal Kingdom?) I think the chances of seeing a snake are pretty slim, especially if you stay on the regular paths and are out and about during busy hours. So no, I will not be going to the pool at 9 p.m. and will avoid taking a late night walk. I stay out of grassy bushy areas.

Last time I was at SSR I went and checked out the Treehouses and I'm not sure I would even be afraid to stay there. I talked with a couple of CMs working out there who told me they had never seen snakes there.

I have, however, had lizards in my room! So theoretically if they could get in so could a snake. And yes, I usually check out under the bed with a mirror when I first get there now. And I don't leave the slider/french door open.

I hate snakes. I know that's probably not politically correct. But I do.

Hey ex-neighbor. I used to live in Marrero. Man I miss the food from S. LA - Hot summer days on the deck/patio with crawfish....I need to get back down there to visit - haven't been since 2001 when I took my husband down to experience good New Orleans cooking.

Hmm...Surprising Rod Blagojevich isn't our Official State Snake...maybe I should campaign on getting that changed.:lmao:

That is because we have so many candidates for the position that is hard for one to take the pole position.

you are staying at AKV.

they have cameras at AKV. the only way a snake could get to your balcony would be to climb a wall. Yes snakes can and do climb walls.

but if one did and not seem by security. well a bunch of people would lose their jobs.

so don't be concerned. others dvc resort yes. AKV has those cameras.

The only snake I have seen so far was at WL. It went across the sidewalk in front of me as we were coming back from he bus stop. But as snakes go, it was relatively small.

Thanks everyone!!! Some of them made me feel better :goodvibes . Now, my DH wants to know all about the gators. He is actually excited to hear about that and the snakes. UGH, not me. :sad2: He said he would love some stories and some pics. :confused3 TIA!!!

I came back from a long day at the MK and found a huge 10' gator laying in my bed. Needless to say I jumped on his back, we had a great tussel, but utimately I threw him out the door and told him not to come back.

Disney tries very hard to manage the gators (you don't see them often - obviously, its in Disney's best interest not to have gators roaming around by the hotels), but a few years ago they had a problem gator that liked the canal near the Beach Club. They'd relocate him, he'd come back. There was also one years ago that liked the area by Wilderness Lodge.

The are also sometimes on the golf courses.
