Just wondering if it is worth taking our laptop to upload our digital pictures? I have heard about airline searches of laptops. Do they give you a hard time?

We simply took it out of the case and put it in a bin. It went through the scanner like everything else and we picked it up on the other side.

Personally, I would buy an extra SD card for my digital camera if the only purpose of bringing the laptop is to transfer pics. Now, if you plan to use the Internet, watch dvd's, etc.. .on your trip, then the laptop is worth it.

Have a great trip.

Airlines don't give you a hard time about laptop computers. A high percentage of frequent business travelers now routinely fly with their laptops. In fact many flights now even provide power outlets for laptops. (On American Airlines, the power adapters are 12-15V cigarette lighter style adapters; there are diagrams at http://www.aa.com/ showing which seats have such adapters.)

At any TSA security checkpoint in US airports, you will need to remove your laptop from its bag, put it in a plastic bin, and send it through the x-ray scanner with nothing else in the bin. After that, you can put the laptop back in it bag. Some years ago, for a relatively short time, travelers with laptops routinely had to power them on. But that ended long ago.

However... if the only reason you want to carry a laptop is to store digital pictures from your camera, then I would recommend buying a new, higher capacity memory card for your camera. They're so inexpensive these days. A 1GB memory card will hold around a thousand 1MB images.

It is so worth taking your laptop on your trip. They rarely give the laptop a second glance once it goes through the scanner.

I always carry the laptop with me on vacation. The airports make it fairly easy to take them through security nowadays, and spending 20 minutes each evening clearing out the work email saves me literally HOURS upon my return.

I just spent 2 weeks somewhere with no internet access whatsoever and when I did get access back, I had to spend 5-6 hours online just cleaning out the junk, paying a couple of bills, and responding to a couple of urgent messages.

Unfortunately in this day and age, it is harder and harder to leave the digital stuff behind. Take the laptop!!
