I'm going off to uni in september so buying new laptop and wondering what everyone else has... my mum has a msi and me and my sisters have an acer laptop but i want an actual proper make people have heard about :rotfl2: so was thinking about those dell inspiron studio ones as need to have loads of memory for all the photoshop software and stuff.
Anyone else with a Dell?? Or was also looking at Macs as there good for art students but they're a lot of money to get the best memory...

dell has a student discount. i would look into that.

i have an inspiron 1525. do not get. it has a lot of issues with the battery and mine has recently started randomly shutting itself off.

i recommend a 10 inch one. they're really compact and can fit in your purse. my current laptop won't fit in my backpack. i'm going to buy a ten inch one before i go back in the fall.

I've never had such a nice user experience on a computer. Sometimes I still can't believe that I own something this good. :) Get get get!!!

I have that too. It's really good! And there's a deal right now that if you buy one for college you get a free ipod touch. If you don't need it you could always sell it and get some good money for it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501. I think I've had it for...4 years or so? I've had to replace the battery once, and the new battery I bought is now dead so I have to keep it plugged in. I'm getting a new one I think for Christmas because this one is now super slow even after restoring it.

So, I'll be interested in reading the responses too because it'll be for college and I've been looking into them!

I have a Toshiba and it's great. The battery life kinda sucks after a while, so I usually have to keep it plugged it. It's bigger, so not very convient for carrying around, which I don't really do. I usually use the library's computers so I can print stuff out, instead of using up my ink, which costs a small fortune.

I would definitely go with a Dell, but my top choice is the Mac.

mac also has a student discount. my macbook came down to about $850 with it (my uncle is a teacher and gets the same discount). i LOVE it! it's rly easy to use and has some awesome software. it also comes with a free ipod touch! then again i am huge in the arts and music, so garageband, imovie, iphoto etc... are all part of the reason i got it. it did not come with a paintshop but i downloaded 1 from mac free. they sell any kind of software you want for these things, so u could build it from the bottom up. the battery life is over 4 hours, with a quicker charge time. safari is rly speedy too. i guess i'm partial cause my uncle is all mac, and my family is becoming that way too. our pc sucks. my mom and i can go onto the same website and it takes her quadruple the time 2 load!

this is the one i have:

i wanted the pro but it was my parents buying, and they said that for high school this is all i needed. for college i'l probably trade this in and get a pro.

yeh i need something i can carry round easily, we have ones which are like 15/17inch, so it will be annoying downsizing :(

okay ... i just looked at the site and there is the studio range and the studio 17 looks quite good

i really need someone who is like technical to look at it with me though, never understand any of it

just so you know, 17 is way too big for college
my macbook pro is a 17 and it's going to be too clunky to carry around to classes, so i'm going to have to get an ipad for taking notes and recording lectures and leave my mac in my room

my school uses windows on pcs officially. i know the students that i've talked to with macs complain that they have a hard time finding a mac on campus that they can print from. another girl in one of my classes last semester was on a mac and when she submitted her papers to our professor, she lost a TON of points and almost failed the class because Pages couldn't format correctly when opened in Word. the professor thought she was slacking through it and not using the proper formatting, but really it was just her word processing program messing with the way Word reads files.

those were points she shouldn't have lost. i'd find out what your school uses mostly and go with that. you don't want to be stuck with something like that girl in my class had.

yeah i love macs, use them all the time at school but the best memory ones are like £1500 so thats around about $1700 i'm guessing and then with all the software i need to get... the whole range of adobe photo and video effect and digital software i'll need like another £1000 for that too, the offer on the mac's is good though with the itouch coz would sell that, my friend told me about it the other day

i'm hoping for the ipad for my birthday. my uncle brought it up in passing, telling me he was looking at it for himself, telling my parents that he wanted to get it for me. fingers crossed!

haha it is cool isn't it? hope you get one! :goodvibes

the ipad looks cool but wouldnt it be really hard to use during lectures???

there are recording apps so i figure just get a little microphone and start the app up and then for taking notes there's the notes app (and with multitasking, maybe i'll even be able to run both! here's hoping anyway lol) and with some getting used to i'm sure the keyboard isn't too bad. i tried it out a few weeks ago and i wound up being able to type pretty quickly when it was turned on its side. a little annoying sitting straight up but typing for me is faster than writing so it should work out ok :)

most of the uni's ive looked round and the college im at now [which might stay on at] all use macs but then its hard to then come home at each semester to back up work and wont work on the pcs... using the macs to pc hasnt been to bad these past two years but i will be doing much more computer work now so that might make sense to think about

yeh the recording app would be very cool, hate having to handwrite lectures as im always so far behind what they're saying and everyone else copying off each other to get it right.... i have a touch screen phone and really hate them so really dont think i would get on with a touch netbook
