A lot of what I do, especially on the laptop I use for music programs (lead sheets, arranging, composing) would be impossible to use without one. On the others, it's more of old habits are hard to break.
Yes, I currently have ten actions programmed to my mouse buttons.

On the PC I have for work, I do because the touchpad and buttons just don't work well.
At home, I have a Mac Powerbook and I don't use a separate mouse. I love the touchpad and button. My oldest DD is an artist and does use a mouse with her Powerbook because the mouse lets her be more precise in placement of the cursor.
I'm new to my laptop. At first, I did get a mouse for it. I rarely use the mouse now. Only using it on certain applications if working on them for a long time & want to get done faster. I wish I was faster with the laptop mousepad, but I've come a long way already.
At work, my laptop is plugged into a docking station on my desk with an extra monitor for dual display. I usually have the VisionApp remote desktop client running on the second monitor with connections to multiple servers (freeware from www.visionapp.com - registration required, hands down the best RDP client I have found), with email, Word, HP Openview and other apps on the main laptop display. I use a mouse plugged in to the docking station. If I have to go to a meeting, I use the touchpad on the mouse.
Here at home, I use a desktop pc, but I also have a laptop running as well, along with a server with some virtual machines running for research and testing. Yeah, I'm a geek.
We had to start using a mouse with our laptop after something was spilled on the touchpad (despite the "no food while using the computer" rule...) and it doesn't work anymore. We got a wireless mouse, and it doesn't prevent us from using the laptop anywhere we want
