Laptop Suggestions

Check with your school. Some schools require a certain one with certain features and programs. Almost all schools have some deal with a computer company so buying it through that program will save you a lot of money.

My nephew is in school for engineering and needed to use a very specific engineering software made only for pc's. He bought a macbook and the software runs beautifully on it.

That's the beauty of the Macs-they can be either Macs or PC's. If you must use pc for certain programs, you can run windows right on your mac. I personally have never needed to run windows on my macs.

I've never seen a Mac run some of the business software I do everyday, they don't even make a Mac version. For emulation in a PC environment, that's great for base programs, but not more of the complicated environments.

The thing I have with Macs is that they are very expensive for what you are getting. A 13in Macbook at the Apple store online is $1000 and you are only getting a 250gb harddrive and 2 GB of RAM.

I bought a HP Dv7T entertainment laptop just last week and got a 17.3 inch screen, i3 duo core chip, 500 GB harddrive, 4 GB of DDR2 RAM and a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce G 105M graphics card for $800.

I would check with what your school recommends. I know where I go, they have a huge discount with Dell, and one with Apple. It has the software and everything that is needed in your classes. check there website( the schools)

My school has a contract w/ Dell, so they try to encourage you to go in that direction. Otherwise, they have very standard spec requirements: 2 GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive, 802.11 b/g wireless card, XP Professional.

Macs don't hold a chance in the major business world. They are fine for home use and graphic design, but business world, you better know your PC skills.

This is the way I'm leaning, too. While I love the sleek look of the Mac, I'm just not a Mac person. I feel like it'd be a poor investment on my part.

goody for you...really.

The business software I use has always run and been made for Macs. To say Macs have no place in business isn't true at all anymore. There may be some businesses that are PC reliant but not all business is all PC based. While I'm not currently working, my old job was about 50/50 Mac/PC and my DH's was about 70/30 Mac/PC.

We have both Macs and PCs in our household. We have had a Gateway laptop and two HP laptops and they have all been junk. The HP currently has a battery life of less than 8 minutes and gets wicked hot when in use. Every other battery for our model has been recalled. I'm not spending $200 on a new battery for a 2 year old laptop. We've gotten the best life out of that HP even though you can't use it on battery power. It is at least still running after 2 years, which is more than can be said for the Gateway or previous HP.

We did just buy a MacBook since DH needed a working laptop for work.

I think when I replace again, I'm going with a Dell or Sony. I'm leading towards Dell because they are cheaper and I won't feel as bad when it stops working.

Considering PCs still make up over 90% of the business world, I think the business/companies you work for are definately in the minority.
