yesterday my laptop screen went black. I could hear the computer working, but the screen itself went black. I tried shutting down and rebooting a couple of times, no change. dh got it to work again somehow or other, he isn't sure exactly how (said he hit a function key, but isn't sure that is what did it).

this morning it went black again. he just got it back again, but I am wondering what might be going on here. is it on its last legs? we really cannot afford a new computer, so praying there is something that can be done.

any ideas????????

Mine did that too, I hooked it up to an old monitor and it works just fine. It has been like this for several months now. It just limits the portability of the computer. I hope someone has an easy fix but I think the screen is just dead :confused3.

wow, I didn't know you could hook it up to a monitor. does it just plug right in?

hopefully it doesn't come to that, but if it does, at least we would be able to still use it until we can afford a new one.

My laptop has a plug in for the monitor. Depending on the monitor it is either the bulky cord where you screw in the plug or it is just a USB plug.

If he hit a function key, he probably toggled the external monitor to the laptop screen. There should be a button on the bottom row of your keyboard that says (fn). Hit that and whatever (f) key on the very top row that has a picture of a monitor, at the same time. You may have to do it several times as it is a 3 way toggle between showing the picture on the laptop screen, an external monitor or projector, and both.
Hope it is as simple as that. :)

setzkitten, does that fix it? or does it mean its dying but that gets it back for a while?

My old laptop did this after a year and three months of owning it. I just decided to replace the computer rather than pay to have it fixed. It did come back on after I bought the new computer but only for a couple more months...then it went out again and hasn't come back. Hopefully you can hook it up to a monitor of some sort or get it resolved!

Had this happen to a brand new computer I got from work. They replaced the screen and no problems now

could be several things but on an aging laptop the LCD Inverter is the primary suspect.

This happened to me, and it was that the bulb of the backlight had broken. The repair place told me it would cost $200 to fix. Instead, I got online and ordered a new screen for about 50 dollars. I am the least handy person I know, but I followed online instructions and was able to replace it myself.

This has been happening on and off to my laptop for almost 2 years now I was told that the backlight bulb is loose, I have not gotten it fixed because it usually goes back on after a min or so and I don't use the laptop for too much so it doesn't bother me.
