Hubby interested in purchasing and I know nothing about laptops!

Remember you will need to subscribe to a satellite service to use the computer for about $50 a month. And if you plan to travel with the computer you will need a separate Ethernet Network Interface Card to access the satellite service.

(don't have one) It looks ok. It is a bottom or towards bottom end laptop. but the specs are ok. No gaming but for internet, email, movies and work stuff probably ok. Here is a review on ytube about it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlMAI30chQ8

I personally like toshiba laptops just be careful with the power cords. Tos laptops have been know to break their motherboard power plug connectors (as well as many other brands) so no moving it around when plugged in. Great battery life with the LED screens. I would check on line, personally i don't think bestbuy has the best prices. Maybe somebody else will chime in with first hand experience. Good luck.

Wow, thanks. I can't believe that Hubs would know about this and still want this laptop. An extra $50 per month!!! I don't think so !!! I have sent him a text alerting him of this. I also sent him the reviews from Amazon but the sat service is a deal breaker to me! :scratchin

Thanks so much! You sound very knowledgeable !!

I don't have one either, but I don't see anything in the specs for that laptop that requires any kind of subscription. It has regular ethernet and wifi. "Satellite" is just the name of the model, as far as I can tell.

It seems like an okay daily-use machine for the basics - web surfing, social media, email, documents, Netflix/Youtube/etc.

What??

Yes, Satellite is just the model name. You don't need any type of satellite service.

If you were just trying to be funny, :thumbsup2

OP, do a Google search for reviews.

Yes, hubs reported back satellite service is optional. Otherwise you can just connect to good old wifi:thumbsup2 If that was a joke I guess it just goes to show I know nothing about laptops/computers:lmao:

Of course I am searching for online reviews on this laptop as well but you never know if those are planted reviews, really odd people, etc.

If I hear good reviews from several in ths DIS fam, I have found those to be more reliable:thumbsup2

I'm not familiar with that particular model, but my family has had 4 Toshiba Satellite laptops in the last 6 years. A PP is correct that the AC adapter is very fragile, we've had to purchased 2 replacements. Another issue we had is the fan, it doesn't cool well and the laptops got really hot. My DD (around 13 or 14 at that time fell asleep with the laptop on her lap and it actually caused a burn (that's a story for a different thread...lol)

we're down to just one Toshiba, and the fan sounds like it will die any second. they were decent inexpensive laptops but the quality is very cheap.

We bought a similar laptop in November for close to $250. The specs are the same other than the processor on the one you are looking at is a little faster.

We just use it for email, web surfing and trying to stream to our tv. It has lots of issues streaming to the tv and my husband hates it. May have to do with the processor...:confused3

I would not buy this computer again--even though I paid half of the cost you are looking at.

I bet we bought the same one ;).

I bought it knowing that I was only going to use it for internet surfing, word processing, and quickbooks. It doesn't get much use compared to my tablets, and, for what I use it for it's fine (for the price I paid).

I have had other Toshiba laptops and will concur with the power cord issues. With this one I simply use it unplugged until it's battery is gone or darn near it, and then plug it in on a stable surface overnight to recharge. Since I use it so little, that's often only once a week or so.

For under $250 I still consider it a good buy, but would never spend the kind of $$ you're looking at for it...

A shame he can't wait for Black Friday to buy it, there are usually great deals.

I'm not sure if all Toshiba laptops are affected, but there is a problem when the laptop asks to update the BIOS.....it will turn it into a boat anchor. The only way to get it working again is to send it back to Toshiba.

I have this exact one. I bought it for my DH knowing all he does is surf, email and watch the occasional movie. I bought it at Staples during the Presidents Day Sale for $249 plus tax. So shop around. It works fine for what I need it for and for what I paid, I am a happy camper.

I bought an inexpensive Toshiba Satellite 5 years ago. I gave it to my dad after owning it for 2 years and he is still using it 3 years later. I had the same problems with it that that everyone else mentioned, the piece that the power plugs into broke off (my dad had PC repair place fix). I did have to replace the power adapter itself because was flimsy and kinked a little after a year. I bought an after market one that was designed better. Also, it got really hot, hotter then most laptops. I just bought an external fan to place it on.

Even with all the issues I had with it it was a good laptop and I liked it. I would recommend it if you're looking for something inexpensive but reliable.

I had that same computer for awhile and loved it. You do NOT need to subscribe to satellite service for it to work. Mine died after awhile w/no warning. Just FYI LOL
