I want a laptop and I know nothing about them. I just want to be able to surf the web, email, and of course Dis. What do I need to look for? Is there a difference between a laptop and a notebook? What do I need to do with it once I buy one and do I need to buy anything else in order to get it running? Do you just plug it in and it works? :confused3

Help me. :sad2:

If you aren't into gaming, but just want internet access, you can get any old cheapo laptop and it'll be much, much more than you need. :) And you can store pictures and recipes and stuff, too. I know zip about computers, but everyone who is smart about them told me that.

They call them notebooks now, because you aren't supposed to set it on your lap, but on a hard surface. That way when it breaks, they can blame you if you admit to putting it in your lap or on the couch or whatever.

Whatever you do, do not get one that doesn't have Vista on it and then install the Vista yourself. Either get Vista pre-installed or do without it. Just a word to the wise there. :) My Sony Vaio worked beautifully until I installed the Vista. :(

You can go to Notebookforums.com and just read and read all about different kinds of laptops and isssues and ratings. ITs loaded with information. Its where we go when we have computer problem. You can even post if you
have any specific questions. Lot of people over there with the "knowledge".

Highly recommend the Sony Vio! We own three in our family and have had great experiences with them! :)

I'm Dis-ing on my Sony Vaio I bought late last year. It was not cheap, but I've been very pleased with it.:)

I second the Apple! Especially if you know little to nothing about computers, the user interface on Apples is sooo much cleaner and more intuitive. They are very reliable, and beautiful.

I was a PC gal all my life--grew up with a Dad who had an in-home computer business, learned to do basic programming as a kid, so I knew of what I spoke--until I was convinced to get my Apple Powerbook. From there it was a short hop to replacing my desktop computer with an iMac, and become a complete convert. I adore my Macs and recommend anyone make the switch.

I would say Apple all the way and if you are a student you might be able to get a discount.
