Im just about to buy a laptop for our trip to port orleans in six weeks ,but i need some advice on how to use the internet while im there, emailing back home ,downloading pictures from dc and browsing the internet after a day at the parks

need some help ?

You need to check it has a built in WiFi card, most do now.
All hotels I have stayed in my laptop has automatically found the connection (sometimes a few) you log in to the one you want. Some one who has stayed there will be able to give you details how yu pay and log in on Disney connection.
This is the main reason I refuse to stay onsite now. I will not pay $10/ day access. I need to have access for 1-2 hours day. On our next trip of 25 nights that would add on $250 just for net access. When they give free access I might stay onsite again.

DH needs internet access whilst we are away, so just pays the $9.95/day fee for access to the wireless network in the resorts. It's extremely straight forward and there is a free-phone number you can dial from the in-room phone for technical support. It's fast, too. :)

So is there WiFi at all the resorts now? Last time I was at the POR I had to connect via an ethernet wire thingy.

No its not at all last time we were there in 2005 Wi Fi was only in public areas of the deluxe resorts, so we used the broadband via ethernet.

When I took my laptop I got a free account with Juno which gave me 10 hours (enough for a week), and they had free dial in numbers as well. Not wireless but good enough for me.

There are many many wifi signals available all over Orlando/Kissimme. All the coffee shops have them for example.
I use Boingo wifi which will connect to many different suppliers at a good rate

Just a thought

are the americans as WIFI crazy as us brits.
You can get wifi everywhere over here and I suppose
its just as widespread over there now ?

BTW
I got a villa with a phone line when I go would it be easy to
get a cheap dial up (or free for that matter) for use with my laptop ?

any ideas ?

Lee ,

Wireless is widespread. You may even find free access near your villa. When we came back on Friday, I used the free access at the airport!

As far as dialup is concerned, you could try it. We used dialup for a long time there - got a free disc from Wal Mart and paid $10 a month after the free trial. Depending on where your villa is you may have more or less acceptable speed on the free local call. Otherwise you may need to do a long distance call. Check also what the arrangements are for local and long distance calls.

The Apple Store in the Mall at Millenia (like all Apple stores) has free Wi-Fi too.
