We normally drive but are flying for the scavenger hunt. We want to carry our lanyards on the airplane with us but can't seem to find what the rules would be surrounding the pins. Does anyone have experience with this?

Never had a problem. They are usually in our carryon bag (as that is the bag we carry around in the parks) and no issues whatsoever. We go 2x a year and my niece actually did some trading on the plane last year with some fellow passengers.

I fly with my lanyards all the time. Never had an issue.

I have flown multiple times with my pin bags and lanyard packed in my carryon bag and never had problems taking them on the plane. Sometimes when going through security they would be looked at and other times they weren't, so it's a 50/50 chance of that happening.

Never put our pins in the checked bags, too tempting for crooks! Always put them in your carry-on. A great tip I heard here was to put them in a ziplock bag. That way they are all together for the TSA agent to look at, and you won't loose any if the back comes off.
