is this something I should buy ahead of time? or pick up there?

what is the price expected to pay at WDW?

Buy ahead of time. You can buy pins in lots online for $1-2 per pin. At WDW, the cheapest you can find a pin is $5 (well 2 for $10). An average price for a keeper pin is $9-10, though. Much cheaper to buy ahead of time and then trade for what you like at the parks.

can you tell me where places to buy online for those prices? ebay? or some where else?

I personally buy on ebay. I can give you some recommendations if you want. Just send me a PM if you want their ebay names.

We always buy our trader pins off of ebay, look for larger lots to get the better deals. We usually pay around $1.60 each. Lanyards will also be much cheaper on ebay. Go to walmart and buy a clear pouch to hang from the bottom of the lanyard for your park pass/key/ FP holder-. Pins in the parks are very expensive, we only buy ones we really want for ourselves and not for trading. My DH can easily go through a dozen traders a day!

I got addicted to pins during my last trip. When I got back home I went on ebay and started kicking myself right away when I saw how much I could have saved if I bought some of the exact same pins on ebay rather than in the park.

I am already buying pins for my nieces to trade when we go to WDW in 2010.

Can someone PM me a good ebay seller recomendation, we are going in Jan and i'd love to get some for my 5 year old to trade with.
TIA!

search on ebay for lanyard fastpass, there is a seller that sells a combo lanyard with a bag attached for less than 5$ they are really cute too!

ebay lanyard starter kits are literally half price compared to what you pay at the park or DTD. They usually come with the lanyard and at least 4 pins to get you started off right.

A year ago I bought myslf a lanyard at Animal Kingdom.. and cost me about $15 (might be off by a few dollars) . Came with the neckalce itself to put pins on, and the little puch to put goodies in.. such as tickets or your key to your room. - There was no designs, nothing special.

I don't know if I would buy from eBay, I'm sure it's safe.. just they might charge you a lot for shipping. Which when I bought a lot of people tried to rip you off that way by selling cheap things and asking for more than it costs to ship (but that's just MY experience, a lot of people in this thread suggest it! so why not? :earboy2:).

There are things to watch for on ebay. Only buy from reputable sellers with excellent feedback. The sellers I buy from sell only legit disney pins and, most of the time, shipping is free. When it's not, it's always been reasonable. You really have to do your homework on ebay before buying to make sure you're getting the best deals from the best sellers. :thumbsup2

I have given up on Ebay after getting so many counterfeit pins from sellers with good feedback. I have started buying from the dizpins.com discussion board. There is a feedback system setup on that site for the sellers and the buyers tend to know more about which pins are counterfeit so the feedback is more helpful than the ebay feedback. You pay a little bit more for the pins (around $2.50 each) but it is safer and it's worth it too me.

thanks for the PM and info everyone, i'm off to search and get us some pins for trading. We've never done it before i have a 5 and 3 year old. Any tips tricks?

Apparently they've went waaaaaay up in price over the last year, they cheapest set I saw last week was 25 bucks at the parks.

I bought my kids two starter kit lanyards and 6 extra pins from the link below the first week of December. The guy allowed me to combine the three orders into one so I only had to pay a single shipping charge and the package arrived 5 days after I placed my order. I got the starter sets for 15 bucks instead of the 30 that I saw the exact same things going for at the parks. The 30 dollar price tag was even ON the ones I bought.

Here's his link: http://myworld.ebay.com/kingpinwdw/ he's got 139 positive reviews so far, three of them from me.
:goodvibes

I've always had GREAT luck buying off of eBay, never paying more than $2/pin including shipping. The thing to watch out for is getting several of the same pin, specially the one from 2000 with the "dancers" on it. I got a lot of those one year, and my DD had a difficult time getting rid of all of them. I'll never do that again!

Lanyards,I were them at work but still they seem so short does any one know were get longer ones??

I haven't used them yet, but I was referred to mousepinsonline.com by several folks from these boards. I plan on buying a grab bag for my kids to share--they can keep what they want and trade the rest.

I purchased a set of pins on E-bay. I think there were 5 or 6 of each pin giving me about 30. The shipping was free. The pins were very nice and we had a couple of CM comment on the Tinkerbell and Mickey pins.

I bought 25 pins from mousepinsonline earlier this year for about $50.00 with shipping. They were great pins and we kept a few. I will be ordering more since we are going on a family trip in July. I did purchase a homeade Pirates autograph book that came in a cool pouch and we were able to use it as a lanyard from Ebay.

I go through Ebay also. "Disney Trading Pins" in the search box usually gets me a lot of listings. Watch out for bad quality pins(made for Disney Europe parks). I can also PM some good sellers from ebay if needed for anyone.

As for trading in the parks, we traded mostly with Cast Members. That got the kids confidence up. There are some that wear a special colored lanyard and can only trade with kids. I think the color is blue. We did not trade with many older people, only a couple of other kids once or twice.

When we saw the 'professional' pin traders over at Downtown disney, they were kinda scary and pushy. I would stay away from those guys unless you know what you are doing.

It is fun and the kids loved it. 'Santa' just left 5 pins each for the kids for the trip to WDW in a couple of weeks.

Here is a pic of the DS11's first pin trading at age 8 while waiting for Spectromagic to start:
