*Major Airports*
The Lake Placid area is within 2 1/2 hours driving time of three major
airports: Albany, New York; Burlington, Vermont; and Montreal, Quebec.
All are serviced by major airline carriers and have car rentals available.

I honestly don't think there is an "easy" way to get to Lake Placid by air. Actually, I think the airport in Montreal is probably closer than Albany. Burlington is the closest but again, not close

Albany is your best bet. Tickets to Montreal are expensive due to international travel taxes. Also some car rental companies won't let you take the car across the border.

Burlington is OK in the summer when you can take the Essex Ferry, but not in the winter--it's actually a longer drive on some roads that can get pretty hairy in the winter. Burlington also has a limited number of flights.

Albany is your best bet--it's serviced by most major carriers and over the years has gone from being a cornfield to being a fairly decent airport. From ALB to Lake Placid plan on about 2 1/2 hours, more if the weather is bad.

Most of the drive is up I-87, a scenic toll-free highway that will be three lanes until you get north of Saratoga Springs. You take 87 to Route 30 onto Route 9. That takes you to Route 73 which will take you into Lake Placid. Parts of 73 are a bit narrow and run along a steep cliff. It's not a good road to be on at night, especially in bad weather. I'd seriously try to plan your trip to be driving that road during the day unless you are going in the summer. There is a nice Hilton Garden Inn right across the street from ALB, if you fly in at night I'd stay there for the night and drive to Lake Placid the next day. If you want to get a bit of the drive under your belt at night, there is another Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Saratoga Springs (VERY expensive in July, August, and early October, reasonable the rest of the year.)

My husband and I go to Lake Placid every year--and have been for going on ten years now. We absolutely adore it there, and have gotten to know the area pretty well. Let me know if you want any more info.
