Ladies, which dress for formal night, can't decide

Can't decide which dresses to take for formal/semi-formal nights. What is typically worn? I have a long, form fitting velvety silverish dress with straps, will I look out of place in it? Also, would you wear back strappy heels and a sheer black wrap w/a silver dress or find something to match exactly. I have a classic long black dress, but needs some alterations.

Semi-formal night, cocktail length dress okay?

I would alter the classic black, but that is just me.

I NEVER get to dress up formal for anything, it would be fun to be glamorous for a night but don't want to be on the Joan Rivers red carpet list. Thanks for the reply!

If you like dressing up - go for it! On our cruise (10/23/04) there were many floor length dressy gowns. My dress wasn't floor length (it is hard to find anything long that looks good when you are only 5'3") but it had beading and sequins! A group of us decided to go all out and wore long black gloves and tiaras as well. It was tons of fun and I didn't even feel out of place with the tiara - there weren't many people wearing them, but there were a few and no one acted like it was really weird.

I would go with the silver dress, but I enjoy dressing up for formal events. As adults, there are so few times we get to dress up. IMHO, it makes the cruise even more fun. However, if you cannot stand the idea of dressing up, dressing up would be a chore, and no one does chores on vacation! Cocktail dress perfect for semi-formal night.
