I just had my first mammo this morning. is it normal to be so sore? I mean, really sore, like bruisy feeling? And hot? will it go away soon? I'm freaking miserable.

They just turned a cantalope into a pancake and then let it snap back again....yup, I get sore.

I was only really sore once, and I think it was because of the girl that did it. Were your breasts tender before the exam? Do you have a low threshold for pain? Take some Ibuprofen and if you don't feel better in an hour I would call your doctor.

I agree with the PP. Take some Motrin, and if it's really bad, try an ice pack. I usually take the Motrin BEFORE I go, it seems to help.

Hope the girls are back to normal soon.

The little secret that no one tells you so as not to scare you away from mammograms is that they CAN hurt like you know what. This is especially true if you have dense tissue.

I have one side with dense and the other with 'regular' tissue. There is a HUGE difference in how each side feels afterwards. The 'regular' side has a small amount of pain that goes away fairly quickly. The 'dense' side hurts for up to two months -- for about two weeks, it's a generalized soreness, then it's odd/random pain that comes and goes.

And that doesn't even count the last time, when they ripped the skin underneath.

Oh joy. Even better, I have to have it done every 6 months bec they 'don't like' that one side is different from the other.

What did help last time was I had a tech who allowed me to tell her when to stop. She told me that it did have to hurt but it shouldn't make me want to cry. I was to stop her when it started to get to that point. This time, I didn't have 2 months of pain, only 2 weeks.

Motrin made no difference for me whatsoever.

I walked away from my first one with bruises. Good thing it was on a Friday, because I couldn't put on a bra for the weekend. The tech kept insisting that everything needed to be flatter, but she couldn't get it flatter. Not only that, but the pulling...and I had to rise up on my tiptoes and arch backward, keep my arm behind my back, and I was told "don't breathe"...And I'm a C/D; it's not like the girls were too small.

Next time I need one, I'm going elsewhere.

It really does depend on who does it, but even on a good mammo, I am usually sore for a few hours. I only had one that left me bruised, and I was very vocal about NOT having the same tech the next time, and it hasn't happened with any of the other techs.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Yippee now I have something to look forward to at my next exam when I have my first mammogram  :scared: I like the advice about taking a pain killer ahead of time, I will definately do that. :thumbsup2

I have had over 25 mamographys done and none of them ever hurt- pinched a bit while doign it but never hurt at all afterward....

Yes, I was really sore and red. It's even worse if you got it the week before or the week of your period.
