I'm 36 and never was on BC pills before. This may sound crazy but I want to have an Aunt Flo free trip to Disney this year. LAst year she came at the end and it was miserable driving home with her, using rest areas etc. I figure if I start the pills next month, then I should be ablt to manipulate and have an AF free month. So is there a good brand I should request? Something with as less hormones as possible!

I like Mircette. Well...the generic version, anyway. :) When I first started taking BCP, I was on Orthotricyclin (sp?). It turned me into a raving crazy person. I would be just fine one minute and the next second would be crushingly depressed. Have you talked to your OBGYN about it? They can usually make really good suggestions based on what you're looking for.

Edited to add: When DH and I went on our honeymoon I was supposed to be on my period, my Dr. just had me take an extra week of the pills, so no period. :)

Don't rely on it completely!

I went on Seasonale earlier this spring. It's a BCP that suppresses your period so you only have one every 3 months. I timed it so that I wouldn't have mine during our June WDW trip. I went two months just fine with no period. Pure bliss. June 2, the day before our trip, guess who started bleeding?

It's gotten steadily worse and I still haven't stopped. :( I have to go to the doctor this Friday to see what's up.

I also take Mircette (Kariva - generic brand name). If I want to skip Aunt Flo, I skip the last week of my pills, and begin the new pack. Very nice to have Aunt Flo free vacations!!

wow, i'm glad to hear that people like kariva (the generic form of mircette). i'm going to be starting that on sunday. i've heard that you only get bleeding for the first 2 days and it is extremely light. is this true?

i'm trying to plan for the same thing. we're going on vacation at the end of july and i was debating whether or not to start this week or next.

i was on seasonale and bled every day for 3 months. it was the most horrible experience for me. i just can't handle medium dose bcp.

just fyi. my dr recommended taking both b complex and calcium + magnesium to combat the crazyness from the bcp. your body loses a lot of the necessary nutrients when you are on bcp.

I've been taking Ortho Tricyclin and I'm really happy with it. I haven't had a period on vacation in a decade :woohoo:

Why don't you just ask your Dr this question??? I'm not trying to be nasty, but we are not all Dr's here. "We just play them on the internet" :rotfl:

I was on OTC for 12 years and on year tried to skip my placebos so I wouldn't have my period when I was at the beach. Well not only did she come anyway, she lasted 4 more weeks! 5 full weeks of AF. :furious:

I've learned since then that if you want to skip your period when you are taking tri-phasics, you can't just skip the placebo week. So talk to your doctor before skipping pills.

But a question - are you getting on them just to have a period-free vacation? I think it would screw up your system more than anything.

Christmaself I just wanted to get some real life advice not medical advice. I assume you knew this already but wanted to look smart which failed! :p

Vettechick Yes I plan on using them from July until October.I will tell my midwife too why I want them. My cycles are very strange- I had AF twice in May.So Im hoping it will work- my midwife will be in on Monday. So Ill have to rely on Dis MD until then!

I can't speak for anyone else, but that seems to be pretty much the case with me. It lasts for about 5 or 6 days, but the last 3 are really more annoying than anything b/c they're so light. (The first two are pretty heavy)

Awesome! That's great to know!

Due to medical reasons, I can't have AF except for about twice a year. But...when I started doing the pill non stop, it took a long time to stop the breakthrough bleeding - and even though it wasn't a lot, it came sporadically and not just when it should have been 'that time'. So you may want to keep that in mind and not just start it up the month before you go or something...just a thought... :wave2:
