This look seems to be all the craze right now. I can't go out and not see at least 2-3 girls/women of all ages sporting a muffin top. Personally, I was taught that if you had flab hanging over your pants/shorts/capris/skirt, you should cover it up, not flash it. I guess I'm old school. :confused3

The photos posted below are mild to what I've been seeing lately.

Thoughts?

Muffin-top mayhem!

Can you smell what's cooking in New York? It's a
fresh batch of muffin tops — summer's new faux pas

Ladies, it's time to admit the pants don't fit...

...Trash 'em and keep your spare tire under wraps.

Kelly Clarkson looks great, usually. But what was up with this getup at a recent concert?

Forget wearing white after Labor Day - there's a new fashion violation in town.

It's called a muffin top: that unsightly roll of flesh that spills over the waist of a pair of too-tight pants, like a muffin bursting out of the pan. And this fashion affliction hits celebrities as much as civilians, according to In Touch magazine's Jarrett Weiselman. "Queen of the muffin top is Courtney Love," he says. "And before she got pregnant, Britney Spears was also guilty."

Christina Aguilera is a reformed muffin topper, often spotted onstage during her wild-child period in a pair of badly fitting pants accessorized with an ample tummy roll. Kelly Clarkson is also a repeat offender. "Especially when Kelly first won 'American Idol,' the muffin top was the one thing that was common in everything she wore - nothing fit right." And her tummy can still be seen rising over the pants she's poured herself into on tour this month.

And it isn't just femme fatales that shop at the belly bakery; screen hunks can sometimes fall victim, too. Their condition? Stud-muffin top.

Matt LeBlanc has been known to top-out, and at the "Wedding Crashers" premiere, Vince Vaughn was hanging out a bit over his pants.

Midriff-bearing men needn't worry as much as their girlfriends, though: the problem's less acute in guys, says Shop Etc's fashion editor Kate Dimmock. "It definitely can happen, but isn't as exaggerated: Men are less inclined to force something. While women will say, 'I'm going to wear this no matter what,' men will say, 'This doesn't fit me, so I won't wear it."

Dimmock's point is crucial. The muffin-top problem isn't about fat but about bad fit: Even skinny supermodels can risk a tummy crust if they jam themselves into the wrong pair of jeans.

"If you don't dress right for your body, it doesn't matter what you're wearing," Weiselman notes. "Unless you have abs of steel, wearing anything that's too tight will immediately result in a muffin top."

And low-rise jeans have made things only worse: Where traditional jeans had a thinning silhouette, hitting at the waist, low-riders sit at the hips - or what Life & Style's Tamara Glenny calls "the bulging point."

Glenny also cautions that ill-fitting tops are as deadly as too-tight pants. "Tight stretchy tops are a problem, even though we always think of stretch as a good thing," she explains. "There's only so much stretch can do: if there's a lot of you, and not enough stretch, it actually enhances the muffin top."

Of course, that muffin top tends to occur just after you've gained weight (that extra hamburger or two on the barbecue all summer can pile on the pounds). If you are a little heavier than usual, you have a choice. Either admit it to yourself, buy a larger size and look as good as ever, or deny it entirely, squeeze into the same old jeans and show the whole world your bakery special.

"People think that wearing something tighter is going to be more flattering, when it's just the opposite," says Dimmock.

But those who follow every fashion rule and still suffer from a little tummy crust needn't worry - it does have one tasty benefit, according to Dimmock. "Men seem to like it," she says. "My husband likes to grab my muffin top and give it a little squeeze."

* * *

Summer's least tasty fashion violation is busting out all over town. Here's how to avoid it.

Tip 1: Minimize, sister!

Pick up the same magic underwear that Gwyneth Paltrow used to stay skinny-looking in the weeks after Apple's birth. "When Gwyneth still had some baby flab, she wore these amazing minimizer things called Spanx body shapers - like a tube, they can roll over any spot on your torso," Life & Style's Tamara Glenny says. Get 'em at www.spanx.com.

Tip 2: Get waist-ed

If you're still devoted to those hipsters, "look for a wider waistband on the trouser, or wear a wide belt with them - it holds you in a little bit more," says Kate Dimmock of Shop Etc.

Tip 3: Junk the hipster jeans

"There's a return to a higher rise right now - a lot of the super, uber-cool people aren't wearing tight, low-rise jeans anymore," says Glenny. For men, Dimmock suggests jeans by James Cured by Seun, which have a special, muffin top-fighting feature: an extra inch of room in the crotch for a comfier, less-constricting fit.

Tip 4: Cover it up

Wear floaty summer dresses, since they always offer a muffin-top-free silhouette. "Longer, Empire-waisted tops are also very trendy now, and they help everyone," says Glenny. "Made from soft, silky material, they hang gracefully instead of gathering tightly at the waist." You can still wear a midriff-baring baby doll; just remember to slip it on over a longer waisted tee, which then holds in any flab.

Thankfully, I have no fat in waist area, but I still haven't worn cut off shirts since my mid-20s.

no muffin top here either....

while I'm not skinny, by any means, I carry my weight in my hips and thighs. I am one of those heavy people who can actually wear hip hugger jeans without the fat hanging out!

No muffin top for me! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Last week, at MGM, I was sitting on a bench waiting for our PS time. There was a group of older teen girls that walked by and one of them had one of the worst cases of muffin top that I've ever seen. :bitelip: :bitelip: It was really bad! Her pants had to be 2 sizes too small. :bitelip: In the next bench, there was a man and his teenage son. popcorn:: I watched them while the girls walked by popcorn:: , they just stared at the girl with the muffin top and the father looked at the son and made a comment. popcorn::

IMO, it's not a flattering look. Some of the young girls look bad, but the worst ones, IMO, are the women my age (40's) that have to accentuate every single roll on their body. :bitelip: :bitelip: Just accentuate your best features, you can never go wrong with that. :thumbsup2

I took the advice of What Not to Wear and bought my low rise jeans in a size larger than normal. My hips still hold them up, but they fit loosely enough to not allow for a muffin top. Now if only I could find pants long enough....

:rotfl: with the weight I have put on it would be more like loaves, not muffins hanging out. Nope my muffin hanging days are over.

i have a little bit of flab in front that hangs out no matter what size i wear. but i don't have the side fat.

I would hardly call those photos muffin tops. Those girls have fine figures. :thumbsup2

Well, I disagree. Those girls' figures might be fine but they should be wearing those clothes. They need to cover up their "muffins". Only really thin people can get away with the look of low rise jeans and shorter tops.

I see a lot of it too. It is so unbecoming and so common. What will these young girls look like at 40 if the look like this now? All the muffin tops that I see out there make me realize that obesity is a very real problem in this country.

Thankfully, no muffin top for me. My thighs are my problem area. I have a flat stomach.

I see girls like those in the pictures ALL the time and can't beleive they don't realize how awful it looks.

Brenda, I wonder about that, too. :bitelip: :bitelip:

Good Lord NO!!! I own a mirror and wouldn't be caught dead with a muffin top. :scared:

Heck no, no muffins here! I have come to terms with the size I am and have the sense to look for that number when I'm shopping for pants.
I am SO SICK of seeing people's hip fat hanging over their pants.

I have a muffin top but only I see it. Always have a shirt that covers it. :rotfl:

.

Thats not true. As a previous poster mentioned - just about everyone needs to buy low-rise jeans in a size larger than normal.

Low rise jeans are still much more flattering, than mom-jeans.

Even slender women with great figures will sport muffin tops if their pants squeeze a little too much in that area. Buying a size up will eliminate that problem and make you look much slimmer.

I only wear low-rise jeans and pants since it creates the illusion of an actual torso for me (I'm very high waisted!) Even though I'm thin, I still have to be careful about how tight the pants are so that I avoid the yucky muffin top!

While those girls in the picture do not qualify for being over weight they both should be wearing the next size up in pants. They are cutting into the hips and look way too tight on them. I don't even know how they are comfortable in them, they must be cutting off circulation somewhere.

I searched Muffin Top in Google... I got this:

:confused3

Mmmmm - Muffin Tops. :teeth:

With all the muffin tops and whale tails, I'm glad that I'm nearsighted. :cool1:

And, for the record, I have a muffin top. Only on guys it's called Dunlop's Disease. My belly dun lops over my belt. I suppose that may be due in part to the fact that my waist size is 40", but I can wear a 38 Low.

Can anyone say TMI???

No muffin top here. People with muffin tops look SO uncomfortable-I don't know how they stand it!
