"Ladies and Gentlemen" becoming an outdated term?

Actively discussing it for 17 pages means you have an issue with it.
Or you find the discussion interesting.

ETA: I didn't show up until page 3, so I have a few more pages until some claims I have an issue with it. ;)

I’m beginning to thinking you’re being fed intravenously or have put your replies on autopilot since the thread started. 😉

Looks like Always has jumped on the ridiculous bandwagon

I've been an Always user for pretty much my entire life and never even paid attention to the logo.
Are people so fragile that they have an issue with this?
Not "being" included is the least of their worries if that is how they choose to go through life- looking to have hurt feelings over something as dumb as the female symbol on feminine hygiene products. (Which i'm sure that is also an offensive term now too to them  ).
I honestly think it’s companies making attempt to appear “woke” & inclusive. Personally, I’d find that exploitive rather than embrace it if I were a member of that community.

Nobody could know personally how they would feel in those circumstances unless they actually were a member of that community or, at the very least, empathetically educated on the subject.

Incorrect. I absolutely know how I would feel if I thought someone was exploiting my cause to make a profit.

Your take is that someone else’s cause is being exploited. I know people who feel the opposite of being exploited. They feel INCLUDED. Walk a mile.

Perhaps they don’t mind being taken advantage of for a profit. I do & wouldn’t want that for a cause that affects me.

Again, just like the original story, the only people I see getting 'in a twist' are the ones that don't like these changes.

Well if you read the article posted you will find at least two activists that did, get in a twist, about the symbol on the packaging.

I really don’t see anyone getting “in a twist” about it. Correct me if I misread, but everyone on here has said if someone personally said they’d like to be address by a certain word, they would be more than willing to oblige.

IMHO, it really boils down to people are sick of being told what they can and cannot say. Every day is a new thing that offends someone, somewhere. It is not about this specific issue, it’s about our society becoming offended by every single piece of minutia.

No, I truly don’t want to offend people. And like everyone else I’m going with this flow.

But if I may be brutally honest, I’m really over learning what new thing I cannot say or do every week. Yeah, call me a grumpy old woman, but a lot of it is over the top. Really, maxi pads/tampons getting rid of a female symbol? If there truly was an outcry, ok cool. But something just tells me there wasn’t an uproar, just two people on twitter with their “in a twist” moment to create a problem where it didn’t exist.

And one more thing while I’m ranting. I really I mean REALLY hate the term “woke.” Ugh! YMMV, but I personally feel it sounds condescending. Can’t stand it!

Nothing at all. It was just an example. In most anyone's day to day life working with people, pronouns are going to be used.
As a pp indicated, there's no need to refer to a person in your presence using third person pronouns.
And I was pointing out that using they/them/whatever could be offensive to some too.
A reasonable person should be willing to advise the speaker of any discomfort.

Some of them for sure, but in the case of Always there were apparently complaints on Twitter from transgender activists.

This thread reminds me of back in the day when a big to-do was had in my neighborhood as a kid. The adults were in a tizzy about why they suddenly changed the term Mailman to Mail Carrier.

My Mail Carrier is a man and we call him our Mailman. But I get why the term Mail Carrier is used and have used it as well.

Times change and words are important. I don’t know that everyone is necessary offended by the current terminology - but why not progress to be more inclusive? Nostalgia for the past is not going to stop the future from occurring.

Why do you care if someone is offended by something if you aren't negatively impacted? No one in here has been able to answer this yet. Is it fear of change? That's a serious question because I don't understand how anyone can react this way about things that have no impact on their lives and really in the grand scheme don't matter at all.

Nothing bad happened to anyone because Always changed a logo. If you didn't see it in an article you likely would have never known it changed. You even said 'it's just two people on Twitter'. So then why not let those two people complain all they want and ignore them?

There are a lot of people in the world, chances are you'll find a couple that get offended by stupid stuff if you look hard enough, you don't have to feel personally attacked by it.

May not be a need, but it could sound better. Here's an example off the top of my head...
Parent and child (female) are talking to a teacher.
Teacher: "Sally is one of the best kids in my class. She has no problems getting her work done. She even helps the other kids with their work. I love having her in class."

I guess the teacher could say: "Sally is one of the best kids in my class. Sally has no problems getting Sally's work done. Sally even helps the other kids with their work. I love having Sally in class."

Now, I'm assuming no one has informed the teacher that Sally isn't a "she". Does the teacher (I better not use "she" there, huh?) NEED to say it the first way? No. But it sure sounds better.

I'm guessing because when we post our opinions that we think these "offenses" are ridiculous on here, we are called names and insulted.

You're right. I should have included the word "solely". Using just the proper name repeatedly in a conversation is really awkward.

Because we are impacted. We are all now collectively learning what we can or cannot say and/or do.

It isn't fear of change. Many of us grew up in a time that was not kind at all to those who were different races, religions, or sexual orientation. We have grown a lot, and we continue to grow. Some of these changes are/were very necessary, and seeing that happen is wonderful.

Like I said before, I don't think anyone on here is purposefully trying to offend, including myself.

But it does impact all of us, because now we feel we have to scrutinize every word we say to anyone outside of our home.

I personally feel in our currently climate, I cannot be authentically myself in front of strangers because who knows what trigger word I could say innocently. I don't say offensive things, but then again, I never imagined saying "ladies and gentlemen" would be offensive. :confused3 I just didn't. Maybe I come from a different time than you. I am Gen X.

But basic phrases and actions I have used for almost a half of a century are all of a suddenly becoming offensive, and that is odd to me. And the rapid speed of everything single word being scrutinized is mind boggling. I truly think people are actively looking to be offended. To that end I ask, why? Looking to be offended is nonsense to me. And a huge waste of time.

Not all PC things are bad, please don't get me wrong.

But I just read an article recently that a professor claimed that Spongebob was a racist. HE IS A SPONGE! Omg, when does it end? It is this constant scrutiny over every detail that has impacted all of us.

I try to keep up because I do care enough not to offend someone, even though I may not understand it. But in that same token, I also have a right to think some things are hooey.

Either you can try to understand my side, or you won't.
However, I actively try to understand others. IMHO the best thing we can do as a society is look at both sides of the coin and work together.

So with that said, most of us to try and understand. However, we also feel inundated with the constant barrage of relearning how we are to be socially adapt in a world that is all of a sudden very different than what we used to know.

I didn't answer this part of your question.

No, nothing bad happened by the logo change. And I don't purchase Always, so you're correct, I probably wouldn't have known. That is not the point. The point is I honestly believe two people went on some campaign to find something offensive. I don't like people looking to be offended. Creating conflict when there is none is juvenile. Like I said before, if it was truly an issue, then by all means change it. But I highly doubt it was. And if they were truly bothered, they could have easily switched to Tampax or Kotex. If you don't like a product or their campaign, the easiest thing to do is not buy it.

I don't have to look hard, people are offended by literally nothing. That is issue I have! I don't feel personally attacked, I just have that collective sigh and eye roll wishing people would take a step back and enjoy life rather than nit picking all of it.

And believe it or not, I get offended by stuff!
But guess what happens afterwards? NOTHING! I get over it and move on.

I don't think you have to worry about what you say as much as you think you do though. A few people offended on social media is not reflective of real life. You will likely never run into anyone that actually takes offense to the phrase 'ladies and gentleman'. You can keep saying it. No one would have called you out if you bought the previous version of the Always package. These stories are silly and not worth getting worked up over. That professor is just one guy and if you say you like Spongebob no one in your life is going to call you racist.

I've never once felt like my life was impacted because I was too scared to talk to people for fear of saying something offensive. Only time would be in another country where I don't know the customs. If you aren't someone that goes around saying legitimately racist/sexist things, which you likely aren't, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. These stories should have zero impact on your life.
