Do you think cramps is considered to be a disabling condition, of course it is only a temporary one, but one in the same. A few years ago i had surgery and something was left inside me, i have since healed but it seems like ever since that happened, the cramp pains have been worse, so bad i am down for the count, can hardly move and even taking IB 600 is giving me no relief. Any thoughts?

To be considered a disability under the ADA, you have a disability if you have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity such as hearing, seeing, speaking, thinking, walking, breathing, or performing manual tasks.
The next question becomes, if it is considered a disability, what would be a reasonable accomidation for whatever needs there are.

I have endo and pcos, cramps are bad, very bad, two/five days a month I'm very limited with what I can do, but a disability, I dont think so really.

I take tramadol for the pain, apply heat packs to my back and get on with it, the cramps will be with me for years to come and I wont let them rule my life.

If you're not trying for a baby you could see if going on the pill would help, you can even skip a cycle that way so it wont interfere with your vacation.

i am not concerned with my vacation, i just deal with the pain, i was just curious as to peoples thoughts, not that cramps is a disability or should be classified as one, but i know many women that just seem not to be able to function during that time period when they endure the pain that goes along with it, the same question could be presented do you think gall stones is a disabling condition, i would say yes because while you have it, walking is pretty impossible, the question is not meant as should it be classified as a disability, as to do you think it is a disabling condition, somewhat unofficial does that make sense

that is a good question and a hard one to be answered, especially since it only would disable a person for no more then 5 days i think

I only rarely had such bad cramps that my day was interrupted. However, when I was having gall bladder attacks I was totally dysfunctional until they abated. Not disabling, though. I could still do things for myself.

i don't know if a gall bladder attack and gallstones are the same thing -i believe they are different but i could be wrong, anyone?

If something was unintentionally "left inside" you during a surgery, you may want to speak to an attorney about malpractice and/or a doctor to get "it" removed. You may also want to talk to a doc about how to manage your pain. As far as being a disability, well - no - I don't think so.

I agree with Shades. While pain is, or can be, a chronic condition and feel disabling, it is a symptom or result of some other condition. The pain itself - cramps in this case - is not and should not be considered a disability.

re: gall stones / attacks

I had stones - assumed the pain those caused were attacks... :confused3

in any case, YOW - and the pain would last for about 8 hours at least.

I agree that none of these pains (or the condition that causes them), while temporarily disabling, could be called a disability. I don't think they would meet the standard of "substantially limits a major life activity" if they are only for a few days a month.
Also, I can't think of any accomidations that could be made to take care of the needs the person might have due to the pain.
