I just interviewed for a position today and I found out that the district is considering one of these books for the grade level novels.

I want to create a Webquest for either one of these books for my second interview (the teach a lesson interview).

I've read both and they both have similar themes.

Which book "presents" better to an audience?

OK, Number the Stars it is ...

I'm rereading Devils right now, and it is getting confusing.

I say Number the Stars...

I'm currently working on a master's in technology in education and one of my classsmates did one of her projects on it. Here's the link if you want to take a look at what she developed...

Thanks for all your help. That unit is very helpful to see. My units have been social studies based (Civil War and Election 2008) so it is refreshing to see literature based.

What do you mean by a webquest? That sounds intriguing. (And good luck on your interview!)

There are two different types of webquests. Some are authored as a "scavenger hunt" of sorts regarding a specific topic. And some of the webquests which are used as an electronic source of addtional information on the topic and taking these to a deeper level.

The topic I used was Because of Winn Dixie....

For a scavenger hunt: I could utilize a chapter by chapter thing where links can be placed.

For example in Chapter One of BOWD, The Beloni's move from one area to another , go shopping in the store and India Opal finds a stray dog.

I would find links such as: Is Naomi, Florida a real place? (Hint: it isn't)

Is Winn Dixie a real store . . Using Winn -Dixie's website find something interesting about the history of Winn Dixie.

The Preacher seems lonely because of his divorce.. You could google divorce rates for the current year or something like that

This type of webquest just gives out general information and sort of fun supplemental info.

However, my webquest was based on more critical thinking skills and used four specific themes of the book. This webquest valued the the evaluation and synthesis of the information instead of fun (but maybe not relevant) facts.

The themes were lonliness, friendship, forgiveness, and reconcilliation.

In this webquest, students in groups were assigned one of these themes and completed group projects on this theme by using various links. (I used various links on health, communication skills and problem solving skills)

After completing a literature circle type worksheet on the information which then the students created either a computer based Powerpoint on the information they learned or a poster.

Google up Webquests and you will see various info on them. They are a bit of a pain to make and create but they are pretty interesting and the students like them.

Devil's Arithmatic is a very good book, but it's very dark and disturbing too since the main character actually experiences the Holocaust- a lot more graphic than Number the Stars, although it's been a while since I've read that one and the details are hazy.
