L&D Nurses, A Question...

In both the hospitals I deliver babies at, they band the father (or who ever the mother wants banded) at delivery. They do not ask for ID at the time.
The father must provide SS# to be listed on the birth certificate.

We didn't need to show ID for the birth certificates. The nurses gave us the form and one of us dropped it off at the nurses station. I don't recall if we had to provide them with SS numbers.

We didn't need to show Id to receive the band in the labor room. When my dh went to the nursery to get our ds he only had to show the band. The father who was deported never would of been deported just because his girlfriend gave birth. They wouldn't of reported him. It was his stupidy that got him deported. Allowing his pic to put all over the papers and news, knowing he was illegal, and was suppose to have been out of the country in Aug.

First of all, let me say that this is not one of those, "should I go to the hospital or just soak my severed toe in rubbing alcohol while asking random strangers on the internet for opinions," questions.

My neighbor is pregnant. The father is an illegal immigrant. He has no ID whatsoever. No license (obviously), no passport. How is this handled when they "band" the baby and parents? Will he be able to get a band without providing ID? Will he be allowed in the delivery room? Will he be allowed to hold or visit the baby (if he/she goes to the nursery) without valid ID? I'm sure this issue must come up (in some communities more than others), and I know medical care would not be denied based on citizenship status, but this one has me a bit puzzled. Thanks for your time.

P.S. Yes, my neighbor is a trainwreck. Feel free to comment on such if you'd like...I won't share those comments with her...and I totally agree. She just met this guy like 2 months ago and got pregnant the first week. I have long since given up trying to actually help her not make horrible decisions. I limit my assistance to practical matters in managing her already screwed-up dealings.

We had a complicated situation at our hospital that involved a mom who was an illegal alien. Not only that, she presented false ID which misrepresented her as an adult (she was less than 18 when she delivered). She then wanted to return to her country of origin, but the baby wasn't allowed to go. It was placed in foster care. A really messy situation. It made no difference to CPS whose body the baby was pulled out of.

Get OUT! Regardless of age or legal status...they took her baby away?????

Hee hee, yes, I agree with you...that is a very good possibility.

Quite frankly, I couldn't have imagined what MORE this woman could have done to screw up her already pathetic life any further. Truly, if you knew all the details, you wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry (from laughing so hard! ). It's so crazy, you probably wouldn't believe me if I told you, anyway. Then she goes and gets knocked up by a TOTAL STRANGER who just happens to be in this country illegally. Nope, didn't see that one coming! I gotta hand it to her. I didn't think she could sink any lower, and then she did...

It just angers me that when this kid (he is quite young, she is pushing 30) gets caught/deported or takes off and can't be found or held responsible for child support (since he has no documentation at all), my husband and I (along with many other taxpayers) will foot the bill for her new baby's health care, food, etc. That's right, folks...she is on full public assistance and will now have THREE kids for the rest of us to support. My husband works long hours, sometimes up to 7 days a week when things get busy, leaving me to deal with a handful of a preschooler by myself, so she can sit on her butt and/or go out looking for random guys to have sex and make babies with. Meanwhile, we have postponed having a second a child for a while longer in order to make sure we can give our child/ren the very best of our time and attention, and afford to give each one the experiences we feel he/she should have. WITHOUT HELP FROM ANYONE ELSE.

In case people are wondering what happened to make me so bitter tonight, there was an "incident" with her today since my OP and I'm pretty ticked at her right now.
