Kona Walk-up?

My family wants to do a breakfast at Kona during our next trip (Christmas).

We usually plan out our days, and by the 28th, 29th, we kind of play it by ear or what we're feeling - obviously we plan out our FP+'s and all, but we tend to go at a much slower pace - wake up later, go to Disney Springs, etc.

Long story short - we're not sure if we'd go on Dec. 28th or Dec. 29th. I see a lot of openings for Kona. Can we get away with just walking up rather than making a set reservation, or should I just make a reservation just in case and cancel it if we decide not to go?

I would not suggest it the week between xmas and Nye. It will be wall to wall people. On a normal day it is hard to get into that restaurant without ADRs but I would think it would be extremely difficult the week you are going. Make an ADR.

I agree, you are going at a very busy time, I would be surprised if you could get in.

It would be better to make a reservation and if you decide not to go, you can cancel up to the night before without incurring the $10 per person penalty. Or, if you really do not want to make a reservation now, you can check to see if any are available as late as that morning. However, you are going during the busiest week of the year, Kona is popular for breakfast and many others will also try to walk up or walk up to 'Ohana for the character breakfast, find it's fully booked and walk over to Kona to see if they can get in.

We just got back a few days ago and after an amazing breakfast at Kona (we had a reservation) we tried to go a second time and just do walk-up. We tried four days in a row and they were booked every morning and weren't taking anyone. I'd definitely make a reservation if you think you'll want to go.

Because we normally stay at the Poly, we've walked up several times before without a problem, though at much less busy times. If you get there early enough, there may not be a problem, but you're taking a chance. I would have a backup plan like also trying to get into Ohana's, or just plan on settling on a counter service meal at Capt. Cook's if everything else fails, which really wouldn't be that bad.

If you want to eat before 9am, you'll likely need a reservation for Kona. Around 9am, you can *occasionally* get in without one. Since my wife and I are late risers, we rarely had an issue getting a walk-up table at 10am during low season.

The week between Christmas and New Years? I'd make a reservation, or resign myself that I'd be eating at Captain Cooks if the maitre d' told me that the wait was excessive or they weren't taking walk ups at Kona.
