I have not tried either of these, but I read somewhere that they are the same thing.

True?
Not True?

I want to try the Tonga Toast at Captain Cook's on my upcoming trip. Some folks say it it is not the same without the Strawberry Compote, which brings the dish together for them. I can easily whip up some strawberry soup to top it with, but I'm not sure it's the same thing as the compote.

I have not been to Kona (my parents and sister would go there and stuff their faces while I was slogging through the marathon), but when I think of "compote" I think of something along the lines of a warm jam. Which is DEFINITELY different from chilled strawberry soup.

It's been a long time since I've had the strawberry soup, but I think it is the same as the compote at Kona. It's not typically what you think of when you hear compote.

But is "whipping up" strawberry soup really easier than ordering the toast from Kona? I do think that the toast without the strawberries is not worth eating.

I haven't been to either Kona Cafe or Captain Cook's, but I really want to try the Tonga Toast. It is a short trip, so DH doesn't want to do another sit down breakfast. We are already doing the Tusker House ROL breakfast package. So it's Captain Cook's or nothing. I have heard conflicting things about the strawberry sauce - 1) Tonga Toast isn't as good without it, 2) Tonga Toast is better without it. I do want it with the sauce! I found the recipe for strawberry soup and another recipe for strawberry sauce (easier recipe, fewer ingredients, doesn't have sour cream, yogurt or cream like the soup). I am trying to figure out which one is closest to what they serve at Kona Cafe.

STRAWBERRY SOUP, Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort

Yield: 4-6 servings

Ingredients:

2 lbs frozen strawberries

16 ounces heavy cream

2 ounces sour cream

3 ounces yogurt

1/2 lb fresh strawberries

Method:

1. Thaw the frozen berries in their juices.

2. Blend all of the ingredients (except the fresh berries) on low until smooth.

3. Chill, shake well before serving.

4. Add fresh strawberry halves as a garnish.

Tonga Toast Strawberry Sauce:
Strawberry Compote-
ingredients
10 large strawberries
1 quarter cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
slice 6 strawberries in place in a small pot add sugar and vanilla cook it medium high for 5 to 7 minutes until mixture starts to boil. remove from heat and place in blender with four remaining strawberries blend until smooth.

I think the one with the cream would be closer to authentic, but you don't really need a whole pint of the stuff for one serving of toast. The other recipe just sounds like strawberry sundae topping. Probably suitable to balance the banana toast, and a whole lot easier. Hey, does captain cooks have strawberry topping, like for the Mickey waffles? That would require no effort!

If they have strawberry topping, that would be perfect!!!
