Which dining spot do you think is better. We haven't been to either one and I'm trying to decide for our summer trip.

We are in a minority of folks who dislike the food at Ohana. Its a beautiful restaurant, and a fun place if you have kids who want to participate in the activities, but we've been several times, and think the food is mediocre at best.

Kona Cafe, on the other hand, is one of our favorite restaurants. It's kind of just the opposite of Ohana--its a rather plain, unthemed place, but has incredible food and service.

If you have young children who like to play, Ohana is a good choice, but if you are judging on food alone, Kona by a longshot!

I'm with estnh. I don't like the ruckus of O'hana. On the other hand, Kona has wonderful food. I don't consider it unthemed. It seems like contemporary/modern polynesian....um..if that makes sense.

Same here. I am not a fan of O'hana's food at all. Each time I've gone there, the food was mediocre at best. I do not have plans to go back.

On the other hand, Kona is one of the best places on Disney property IMHO. Food is always delicious (my husband always goes for the famous Tonga Toast) and the service is great.

My vote is for Kona.

I'll play devil's advocate.

We love O'Hana. Our kids are picky eaters so they bring food over for them from Kona. We wait for a window seat at O'Hana in the main dining room, kick back, relax, and enjoy the atmosphere. We don't mind the hectic loud obnoxious dining room because we have two kids (6 & 4) who are also hectic loud and obnoxious :banana:

I don't think you will go wrong either way. Kona has more choices and really yummy desserts! O'hana has lots of atmoshpere-Kona doesn't.

I vote for 'Ohana, that is a favorite of mine. I do love Kona too, but you just can not beat 'Ohana.

Tonga Toast is a texas toast w/ a banana stuffed in between two pieces. Then it is deep fryed, & rolled in a cinnamon sugar mixture. It is pretty good, but very heavy. I could only eat a few bites of it, but I did like it.

Here's how we feel about them:
'Ohana = Quantity
Kona = Quality
You'll have a good time at either.

Kona's food is fabulous!

If you will be with children, however, they will like Ohana much better.

We love Kona, it's one of our favorite WDW restaurants. The food is wonderful. We didn't care for the food at 'Ohana at all. So for us the choice is easy - Kona!

We have slightly older children (pre teen /teen) and they did not like the food at 'Ohanas. Plus they were too old for the activities at 'Ohana. So, we are trying Kona this trip.

Dont wait to long to make your ADR for whichever you choose, but especially if you are considering O'hanas. I started calling in late February for May 4th and could not get into O'hanas before 8PM. I booked Kona as a backup (6:30 ADR with no problem)and finally was able to get a 5 PM at O'hanas last week(I have called daily). I was also torn between the 2 but finally decided O'hanas would win if I could get an ADR because the atmosphere sounds so much more themed. I have a feeling the food is better at Kona and we will check it out while we are there in May and probably try it on our next trip. I was just a little nervous that my DH would ask me why we are spending so much $ for dinner at a coffee shop( it was described this way in a post on a previous similiar thread). I think we will be happy either way, but it was a chore getting that ADR for O'hanas, so book soon, you can always cancel it if you change your mind later. I got many thanks from the CM who cancelled my reservation at Kona.

I have read similar descriptions of Kona, but did not get that feeeling at all when I ate there earlier this week. I wish I had taken a few pictures of it. The ceiling was beautiful and the lighting was certainly not like a coffee shop.

Kona is a beautiful restaurant. I think people are put off by the fact that it is open to the second floor of the Poly, but I liked that about it. The food was top notch.

I'm curious... one poster mentioned having picky eaters for kids, and that O'hanas brought food over from Kona.. was this arranged before hand or once you ordered? My kids are picky eaters as well, and while we (and they) want to experience many different restaurants, we are worried that they will find something to eat to their liking!

When we went to O'hana's last year, we just asked the server if the kids could get chix fingers and fries. They brought it out with the rest of our food
.
I like O'Hana for the fun factor but Kona for the food!!!

I will be doing O'hana this trip unless I can change my husbands mind.

I haven't been to Kona Cafe (yet), but my friend and I ate at Ohana this past December. The restaurant was pretty noisy with the Hawaiian-themed games for the kids, but we both enjoyed the food and atmosphere (even though we don't have children)! The meal is served family-style and is all-you-can-eat. The starters include salad with honey lime dressing, honey coriander chicken wings, wonton chips, Maui potatoes, vegetables, and sweet and sour peel-and-eat shrimp. The skewers are prepared over an oak fire and consist of steak, turkey, pork, and pork sausage (with dipping sauces). The dessert is bread pudding. (Yummy!) Just remember that the alcoholic beverages at Ohana are not included in the dining plan. (I had an "Island Sunset" with my meal, and it was absolutely delicious!) My friend and I loved Ohana so much that we are planning to eat there again during our next stay at WDW! I hope you find this information helpful! Have a wonderful time! :stitch:

I guess I'm in the minority here....I think the food at 'Ohana's is GREAT!!! The atmosphere is nice too, especially if you can get a window seat during Wishes!! I never found it to be too noisey, just FUN!! We make sure to eat there EVERY trip. The bread pudding w/ bananas foster sauce is OUTSTANDING!!
Whatever you choose...ENJOY!!
