Can anyone tell me what the food is like at the Kona Cafe. We are going to WDW in September, and I am thinking about making ADR's at this restaurant. We ate at Ohanna's last year, and even though we loved it we would like to try something different this year. I was also wondering about the Concourse Steakhouse.

Thanks in advance. :)

hi tinawv,

I ate at Kona last Feb. and really enjoyed it. I was solo and a walk-in. It was pretty late in the evening and decided to go there last minute. I had to wait just a bit but it was ok, just enjoyed the Poly lobby.
My meal consisted of the pot stickers for appetizer and the shrimp and scallop dinner. The pot stickers were delicious and my main entree was very good. I debated on that or the macadamia crusted mahi-mahi and kind of wished I would have gotten the latter. I don't eat a whole lot of fried foods and the shrimp, although very tasty, got a bit too rich for me. I also had a pina coloda. The atmosphere is much less than 'Ohana but very peaceful, which I desired. I sat at one of the small tables near the railing overlooking the lobby which was lovely. I am going again in Oct. with family and we already have adr's for breakfast. I can't wait.

Concourse Steakhouse, on the other hand was a disappointment for me. It was my day of arrival in Feb. and was pouring rain. I stayed at the WL and by the time I took ME from airport, checked into the hotel and got a bit settled I was famished to the point of getting ill. I took the boat from WL to CR (remember the rain :umbrella: ) and went to CSH for a late lunch. (It was about 2pm) I went to the podium and asked if they had a table for one. Sure, no problem. I only had to wait about ten minutes. My buzzer went off so I walked back to the restaurant and my waiter walked me to the table (after rolling his eyes to another CM because I was solo I suppose. He really doesn't know what a good, I mean great tipper I am--seriously) Anyway, he proceeds to seat me in the CENTER, I mean up on stage, really, of the whole restaurant. It is NOT crowded. I asked if I could have "one of those tables" off to the side possibly and he said those were reserved. (for when, ten o'clock that night??--no one person sat in any of them during my entire lunch) OK, I will take what I can get. I am at WDW. There were only about eight other tables filled, but with families and convention people, so some big groups. So, I was performing for these pretty good sized groups all by my self--in the spotlight. :teeth: I ordered a bowl of onion soup--it was good, and the steak that is on their lunch menu. The steak, to me, had an odd flavor and was not served with anything but onion rings (remember the fried food thing). It was just ok. What I was really down about, though, was the service. Needless to say I am not a big fan of this venue. I know, could have been an off day, give it another try. Maybe, or not.

Sorry this turned into the saga review. popcorn::
I could just say Kona---YUM
Concourse Steakhouse---not so much

:artist: --don't know how he fits into my story but he's cute.

My DH, DD6(at the time) and I ate a breakfast and a dinner at Kona (which was way back in Jan 2004! Seems soooo long ago!).

I remember I had very tasty caesar salad that was the size you would expect at a local restaurant. I loved the large shaved pieces of parmesan and it wasn't swimming in dressing, just the right amount. I also had the crab cakes appetizer as my entree. There were 3 crab cakes roughly the size of a raquetball. They were also delicious. I was full (not stuffed) but no where near hungry. My DH had the Macadamia Mahi Mahi, but I know he didn't have the mushroom risotto (he doesn't like mushrooms) I think I recall the mashed potatoes. He remembers the meal being delicious. I can't remember DD's menu choice, but I'd place a bet on chicken tenders or pasta :rotfl2:

Our breakfast experience was good too. I had the infamous Tonga toast, and my DH had the Big Kahuna (and ate it all  ).

Overall, we remember the menu having some 'fresher' or 'lighter' choices, which we were pleased with. We did enjoy the atmosphere as well. It was during the marathon weekend, and there were a good bit of people waiting for tables at 'Ohana, but the atmosphere in Kona was relaxed an very soothing! Our server was wonderful and even taked for a while with my DH about the marathon and some other things!

I always recommend Kona!

We love Kona's ~ the only thing that I don't care for is the NOISE because the restaurant is so open to the lobby and Ohana's. But we still go back every trip.

We just tried Concourse steakhouse a few weeks back for the first time. We went back again, we really liked it.

Does the coleslaw at Kona still have the Asian (vinegarette) dressing ??? I noticed on the allears menu website that the lunch pulled pork sandwich comes with "creamy" coleslaw. Please say it ain't so !!!! The asian dressing is yummy !!!

LOVED Kona (we went for the 1st time last month)! Kids had standard kids'meal food, DH and I split the pot stickers, I got a scallop dish and DH got a Japanese noodle dish. Everything was very tasty. Desserts are the best -- works of art and yummy! We didn't find it noisy at all, even though it's open. This was our best dinner all week, and if we were on the meal plan, would have gone again.

I just changed one of my ADR's to Kona since I have only heard positive things about it:)

When I stayed at the Polynesian I have to say that I went to Kona Cafe for breakfast at least three times for the Tonga Toast, It is amazing! Amazing atmosphere, I really enjoyed it. Also for Concourse Steakhouse, lovely restaurant and AMAZING food. I usually have the salmon and its really good. My family members have tried the New York Strip and the Filet Mignon, and they are great. Nice quiet atmosphere, barely notice the monorail gliding through the contemporary every few minutes. You can hear some of the music and everything else fromm Chef Mickey's, but that didn't bother us much. Lovely restaurant.

DH, DD (11) and I ate at Kona on our trip in March. It was the best meal of the trip!! We had been at the GF riding speedboats and decided to eat somewhere on the monorail. We arrived about 5:00 and did not have an ADR. We waited about 30 minutes, but enjoyed looking around the grounds in that time. We were also seated by the rail next to the lobby and did not have any problem with noise. The bread that was served with some type of dipping oil was very good. We devoured it immediately. We ordered the Char Crusted Medallions of Filet Mignon and Beef Teriyaki for all three of us to share. There was plenty of food and it was all great!! I don't think there was a morsel left on the plates. We always want to try dessert, but we were way too stuff to order any.

We really enjoyed the Kona Cafe in mid-May. We stayed at the Poly and it was convenient and delicious. DH had the pot stickers, macadamia encrusted mahi, and chocolate lava cake. I had the crab cakes, the shrimp and scallop entree, and the fruit mousse. The crab cakes were full of crab and the shrimp and scallops were excellent. DH said the mahi mahi was ok (said my shrimp and scallops was the winner), but really like the chocolate lava cake. We also sat at a table near the railing separating the lobby from the restaurant and didn't notice too much noise - DS loved the waterfall in the lobby.

Thank you all for the information. Because of the great feedback, I have made ADR's for the Kona Cafe for our trip (me and my sister) in September. :)
