If you aren't arriving terribly late on that first day, then I HIGHLY recommend the Kona Cafe!! This is my family's favorite all-around Disney restaurant, including my 2 teen sons. I don't feel that it has "no atmosphere", it's just not very heavily themed like some of the other restaurants are.

Here are some pictures to help you decide:

Seaspray, great pics! Is that last one the kiddie cone? I'm wondering if that is available to children 3-9 on the dining plan? I'll pay for it oop if not, my kids would love that!

Yes, that's the kiddie cone. We weren't doing the Dining Plan on that trip, but I don't see why it wouldn't be included as a dessert. :)

Kona was the worst meal of our stay. It is loud, tables are too small and crammed together, service was below average. The food was okay, not horrible just nothing special. The best part of the meal was dessert and they were very good.

Boma on the other hand is wonderful. Don't miss this restraurant especially if you are staying at AKL.

I think that when you are arriving late, it can be better to just stay at the hotel and relax for a bit. Wandering the hotel can be very fun. Supper by the pool is our plan for our first night.

We too loved Kona, we went there lots for breakfast and dinner when we stayed at the poly, but went out of our way to go several times last year even though we stayed at POR. It's relaxed and there is a great selection of food, plus you can watch the world go by on the top floor of the GCH, then step straight out of Kona onto the monorail - definitely make it a priority.

Hi, everyone, I wanted to know is the breakfast at Kona's any good? Were getting married at Sunset Pointe and wanted to have breakfast since our wedding is at 2 pm. Also do u have to make a ADR for this restaurant or is walk-in? thank u in advance. :tink: pixiedust:

thank u zinkie, checked it out, and convinced us to go. So we'll be trying Kona's for breakfast on our wedding day.=0) By the way, do u know if u need an ADR for this place?

I would schedule the ADR for the Kona Cafe Breakfast (just in case).. It
would be a shame to name do the ADR and then on your arrival, it was
booked...

Have fun and congrats on your upcoming marriage...

Steve

thank you zinkie, will do, as soon as were 180 days out. thanx again for ur help. :tink: pixiedust:

Tink606, I think it is safe to say that you should make an ADR for any TS restaurant that you want to eat at. The Dining Plan has made all the TS restaurants much busier than in the past.

Kona is WONDERFUL. Best prime rib on Disney property. The banana caramel creme brulee' was sooooooooooooo good too.

If you have your own transportation then just drive over to Kona from AKL. It doesn't take long at all.

We ate there then took the monorail over to watch Wishes from in front of the MK.

Thanks for the tip on the Prime Rib, it was that good huh... I was thinking about the Mahi-Mahi ....

Steve

thanks Seaspray! We're definitely going to have to get those, if only to figure out how to make them at home.

I had the mahi-mahi and it was very good. My husband had the terriayki steak - not too good.

stay with boma!!! i was 19 when i ate there adn loved it! they have things everyone will like. it is a buffet so most disney buffets offer things for everyone. the environment is awesome and the food is great. i had some sort of corn choweder that i can not forget about to this day and lots of yummy meat! i dont think you should cancel this. but i also reccomend rainforest cafe in animal kingdom. that is another fun place that your kids will definitely like!

I think Kona Cafe is a great place to eat lunch, but considering you are staying at the AKL and arriving late I would select something closer. This way you can relax and avoid waiting for a bus or driving a rental car to dinner.

Boma is a noisy, crowed, tables close together, rushed dining feeling, food made in advance buffet while Jiko is more sophisticated table service, quiet dining, relaxed, tables spacing greater than Boma, food made to order dining experience.

I would recommend dining at Kona Cafe during your stay, especially if you want to break away from the MK to experience a good table service meal away from the kaos of the daily MK feeding frenzy.
