I missed the window for using my latest Kohl's cash and was going to toss it. A coworker who also works at Kohl's told me not to do that...to take it to the store and ask them to do an inquiry. At her store they deduct a dollar from the balance for this.

Well, I went this weekend to shop the 90% off sales. I found 6 men's shirts and a pair of men's pants for my boys...total was $58. The sales clerk was very nice...did the inquiry and applied the $10 to the payment, bringing my total cost for 7 clothing items to $48!

Thought I'd share...don't toss those expired Kohl's cash certificates! It's their official policy to honor them whenever they are presented!

I have used them twice after they expired with no problem....what is this inquiry thing that costs a dollar? When I used my expired ones, they didn't 'charge' anything?

I have not been charged to use my expired Kohl's Cash either :thumbsup2.

does anyone know if the total of $50 has to be before or after taxes? I'm gonna return something and it would drop my total down to $49 and some change before taxes!??!?

The total it before taxes. I don't know what they do if you have already used the Kohl's Cash.

If you have already used the Kohl's cash, they deduct $10 from your refund amount. On the receipt, it tells you the return value taking everything into consideration. I just ran into this scenerio yesterday:
purchased $98 worth of merchandise last month. (before tax)
rec'd one $10 coupon at that time
spent the coupon
ret'nd a $16 item on that receipt
was told to get money back it would be $6 since I spent the Kohl's cash
I pointed out that $48 worth of my purchases didn't include Kohl's cash
didn't matter. the computer says it, so it must be accurate
took a store credit for the $16, but was not happy with the policy

I've never had this problem. If the merchandise kept still qualifies for the Kohls cash, it's never been deducted.

If it would bring the total under the qualifying amount, they have alway offered to put the return for full price on a Kohls mdse card instead so that I don't loose out on the Kohls Cash.

My husband just returned a defective jacket I got him for Christmas. I had paid cash and got $10 Kohl's cash for the purchase. They would give him $43 or something in cash OR $52 in store credit. You bet he took the store credit! I don't get how that works, but oh well!

I've never had that problem either, and I've returned lots of items

While I was returning something at the service desk last week, a lady handed the Customer Service Lady expired Kohls Cash. The lady at the service desk told her that they would accept it this time, but, they are changing their policy soon. She said if its expired when it does change, they can no longer accept it. What I usually do anyways with my Kohls Cash, if I dont want to spend it during the time limit, I just buy stuff to use it up and then return it. You get store credit that doesnt expire this way.

:guilty:

I hate to admit it but I've done this as well. I always return the item within a day or two so that the mdse isn't old or out of season and can still be sold at the same price.

hmmm...this is really interesting....
I've been in line behind someone who was trying to use her expired Kohl's cash & the cashier said no....:confused3

If I were you, I'd have bought a $2+ item, to bring my total up over $100 and earn another $10KC. I can't stand being that close to a goal and not getting the reward...

But hey-at least they gave you the full value in store credit. Some stores take a deduction even if you get the refund as merchandise credit.

Darn I wish I checked this before I went out today, I have $20 in unused Kohls cash and spent $100 there this afternoon :sad1:

I also had a problem exchanging something at Kohls a few days ago. I was exchanging two items - exactly the same except for a different size - and buying one other new item. The clerk at customer service was having problems doing the exchange on the register so she asked if it was okay to just do a return on the items and then I could repurchase them. They were still on sale for the same price so this could have been an even exchange - except - my original purchase had rewarded Kohls cash. I asked her what this would do to the value of the the Kohls cash and she advised that it would have no affect on it, so I told her to go ahead. All was good til I looked at my receipt once I was back in the car. $10 had been deducted from my Kohls cash. I went back in and talked to a supervisor over customer service who couldn't figure out how to fix it, so she gave me a $10 gift card. While I was walking out of the store I saw that the gift card expired that day! So, on my way out I spent it. I'm glad I looked at both pieces of paper or I'd have had a great time getting that all straightened out. It doesn't seem like such a big deal - but hey! - $10 is $10.

This is why my coworker told me about it. She said the "new" policy started four months ago, but some stores/clerks don't know about it, so I should ask.

My local Kohl's was nice and gave me full credit for the expired amounts...I had $10 that expired earlier this month and .51 left on from last summer! The official rule is that they are supposed to charge you $1 for the inquiry, but you might luck out and get the full amount.

My clerk had to call the floor manager for approval, but all it took to get that was scanning the code on the coupons!

Thank you for the great tip!:thumbsup2

I have used expired Kohl's cash a few times, but they never do an "inquiry" or deduct any amount

I was in there again today at the service desk and the lady in front of me had a 30% off that expired yesterday. She asked if she could use it today and the girl told her yes, and she signed it in case the cashier didnt take it! I never heard of that before. I guess it all depends on the worker!

I was also been told "no" when I asked if I could use and expired $20 Kohl's cash certificate. It was about 6 months old and I couldn't find it at the time I needed to cash it in. I threw it in my receipt drawer and came across it again just yesterday when I was throwing away unneeded receipts. I almost tossed it but decided to keep it and call Kohl's to see if there was a way I could use it. Now it's over a year old, so they'll probably say no again.

Update: I just called customer service and spoke with "John" who answered from a call center in Nicaragua. He told me that I could just do an online order and then call back give a service rep the information and they'd deduct the Kohl's cash amount from my order. I asked him if I could do this in the store instead since I live a mile away from a Kohl's and I don't want to pay shipping. He said each store makes their own rules, but that if I ordered online, they'd take off the shipping.

I'm not sure I believe they'll do what he is saying. When I asked him for his name and ID # he said he didn't have an ID# and his name was John. Then he said to just call back and ask for him & he'd take care of it. Okay, so I'm really going to reach him again in Nicargua? Hmmm... I'm not sure I would even want to give him my credit card info! Not sure what to do now...
