Kohl's New Policy ??

I love Kohl's and shop there often. Love the coupons, etc. I received a nice $10 gift card from Kohl's to use in my birthday month. I know to use that type of thing on something I won't return, but this time I wasn't so lucky. Of course I should NOT receive back more money than I paid -I get that. However, I asked at the return desk if I could exchange for a different item in the store so I don't lose my $10 credit. The answer is no! I think this is new. Thoughts??

(to make sure I explain this correctly - I bought a decorative pillow for $30. Paid $20 with my $10 gift card. Upon return I should only get $20 - of course. However, I wanted to exchange for a $35 item and pay only the difference of $5 to keep my $10 gift card credit, and this was a no go)

I've run into this situation in multiple stores that offer $$ specific to their store, for example, Staple rewards, Office Depot $, etc. The discount is not only not refunded but it is very hard to get a credit. I had $10 at Office Depot one time. Bought a $10 item and wanted to exchange it evenly for the same item (I forget what was wrong with it.) They did not want to do it. I had to talk to a manager who did it, but very reluctantly.

Anyway, yes, kohl's has changed their policy regarding Kohl's cash or other cash coupons. I really am not happy. I've been a loyal, and I mean loyal, Kohl's shopper for years. I used to purposely try to shop during the Kohl's cash promotions so I could earn the Kohl's cash. But not sure I will do that anymore and I will make sure to only spend that type of coupon on items I know I will be keeping.

Was the return done within the period that you could use the Kohl's Cash? If not, I can see why they would not refund it. If they allowed it, you could essentially extend the period of the promotion by buying something with the intent of returning it and using the credit later on.

In those situations, I always ask for a store credit, then I get the entire amount. One of the salespeople suggested this awhile back, and now it's the only way to get all the value!

It wasn't Kohl's cash - just a card for $10 that looked like one of the 15% off cardstock thickness type cards you get in the advertisements received in the mail.

I never thought of store credit - it went back on my Kohl's charge. I wonder what they would have given me in store credit. I'll have to ask that!!

I came back within 2 days to exchange.

I always ask for store credit - they give you credit for items purchased, plus the Kohl's cash.

Waving at you from Highlands Ranch - small world! Anyway, yes, it seems they have changed their policy recently. I had a similar situation occur a couple of weeks ago. I guess they must have been losing too much money on returns or something.

That is new to me. I mean you paid the 20.00 some dollars you should get that back. I know the Kc policy was changing in that you lost the kc no matter what but I never got full details of it.

I ask for store credit so I don't lose it. If they give you any hassle, just take it back without the receipt.

Kohl's DID change their policy, about a month ago I think. They now apply the coupon as a price reduction instead of as a seperate offer on the receipt I believe (I may be wrong on that though). I believe it is because of the $ off coupons you can buy on ebay (which are related to the email signup $ off coupon).

You can no longer get the $ back, even as store credit. I have no idea if this applies to Kohl's cash as well.

I ask for store credit so I don't lose it. If they give you any hassle, just take it back without the receipt.

It is almost never worth taking back anything to Kohl's without a receipt. They will only give you whatever the lowest price they sell the item at. Which can be 50% or less of the tagged price.

My latest issue with Kohl's is... I bought a bunch of stuff with a 30% off coupon, and I used some Kohl's cash on the purchase. When the total came up, it was a lot more than I expected. The reason is that they deducted all of the Kohl's cash BEFORE they took off the 30%. So, I bought $100 worth of merchandise, used a 30% off code and used $50 in Kohl's Cash. I expected to pay $20, which would be $70 ($100 - 30%), minus $50 Kohl's Cash. Instead, they put in the $100 of merchandise, then deducted the $50 Kohl's Cash; then took off the 30%, making the total $35.

I thought that was pretty shady - I mean Kohl's Cash is supposed to be like cash, and a 30% discount is supposed to be taken off of all of the merchandise you purchase. I don't know whether that is the policy or whether the clerk make a mistake, but I let it slide since I didn't feel like arguing about it.

They didn't make a mistake. I find it easier to think of Kohls Cash as a coupon. The coupon always comes off before any percents off savings. It dosen't matter how the cashier rings it up, if they do the Kohls Cash first or last, it will always come off before the percent off does.

I wonder if you could have them ring up the entire purchase, take the 30% off and then after they have totaled everything, pull out your Kohl's cash. I agree....very sneaky.

No, that's a clearly stated policy for Kohls. The Kohl's Cash comes off first then the % off coupon comes off the remaining amount.

Good idea, but I guess from what maxiesmom is saying the computer would do it that way no matter what. I used to think they were pretty generous to have a 30% coupon available at the same time they're accepting Kohl's Cash, but I guess they're not all THAT generous!

Look at it this way: Why would they take the percentage off a sum of money that you are not paying for? The Kohls Cash isn't legal tender, it is a coupon that they have given you. Why would they then turn around and give you another discount of top of the free money they gave you?

I'm didn't see this mentioned, but from now on it seems that you have to use our Kohls Cash in the time frame listed on it. They won't let you use it late anymore. The cashiers at my local Kohls were emphasizing the dates, and stating it must be used during that time, not later.

I get it, but I don't really think they should call it "cash" if that's not how they treat it. They even make it green and put dollar signs on it!

Also, don't forget 30% off is not really 30% given Kohl's inflated prices. Granted, we do get some good deals at Kohl's, but their "regular" prices are outrageous compared to other retailers!
