Hi all. If I remember correctly (and there is a chance I have the store wrong) if I charged something at Kohl's using my Kohl's card and only paid half of the balance when the bill came- I would not be charged interest?!?! Am I crazy or is this still a thing?

I don't remember what the exact percentage you have to pay to avoid the finance charge is, but the amount is stated on the bill. It will say, "In order to avoid a finance charge, you must pay $XX.XX" or something similar to that.

I don't think Kohl's does 0% interest promotions...so if you don't pay in full, there will be an interest charge.

See my post above -- you can absolutely carry a partial balance (I think it might be about 1/3 of the new charges but the amount is clearly stated on the bill) with no penalty/interest. I've seen it on my monthly statement for the last 2 or 3 years at least. I've even taken advantage of it a few times. It might only be offered on their MVP card -- not sure.

Yes, I have seen it on my bill as well. I think it is 30% you have to pay. I would call their customer service to be sure.

Well dang...good to know! Never looked and assumed it was like other store cards out there.

I just pulled up my statement from over Christmas when I was charging on the card frequently. It says:

New balance: $280.29
Payment due date: 01/06/2017
Minimum payment due: $27
To Avoid Interest Charge Pay: $280.29

Not sure if you'd need to charge more than that to get a break on the "avoid interest" amount. Mine was the same as the new balance. I always pay in full so I've never paid attention before. My other two statements were less than this and both said I had to pay the whole thing to avoid interest.

ETA- I'm an MVC cardholder and have been for almost 10 years. (edited a second time for MVC not MVP!)

I'll have to look next time I pay my card. Most cards say minimum due to avoid late fee. Not to avoid interest

That's interesting. There must be some special criteria involved. I'm an MVC (Most Valuable Customer -- not sure if that's the same as the MVP because I think my card *used* to say MVP but I noticed today it says MVC). I think I've had a Kohl's charge for at least 15 years and probably charge something to it nearly every month. I don't have a statement to look at right now to see if there's an explanation as to how they calculate the "To Avoid Interest Charge Pay" amount but I know for a fact that my amount on that line is always lower than the "New Balance" amount. Maybe it's only available in certain states???? Or maybe it's based on how much someone charges to the card over a certain period of time???? I know I've read an explanation somewhere but I can't find it on the website so it must be on the statement. I'll have to look when I get my next statement.

Totally mis-typed, it's MVC, not MVP :rotfl:

I live in VA. Not sure, it could very well vary based on state. If you go to the my kohls charge page and sign in, you can click on "statements" then "view your e-statement" and it will pull up links to your recent ones. That's how I looked up my one in December/Jan. The pay info I posted is at the top right of the statement. I've been a card holder since 2007 and I don't charge on it every month, usually a lot around Christmas and then in the spring when I'm getting DS new clothes for the summer. I always hit the MVC charge minimum each year though.

I tried looking online but it says I don't have any past statements available to view. :confused3 They must share an IT department with Disney.

It varies by state. When I first got my Kohls card (10-15 years ago) they did the 90 day no interest billing (Belk also did it at the time). So, if you paid the balance in 3 billing cycles there was no interest. At some point the law changed (at least in my state) and it's been many years since this was an option.

I remember the 90-day no interest deal but this is different. It's not interest free on the full amount. It's only on a certain percentage of new charges for that particular month. There's some convoluted formula but I can't find it anywhere right now.

Many, many years ago, they would allow you to pay a minimum amount for 0% interest, but that went away.

They've also started restricting their discounts on Nike stuff, so we've basically quit shopping there.

That is not Kohls restriction but rather Nike's. Other stores including JCP also won't usually allow the Nike discount because Nike itself is optinbg out of that option. It stinks because now that my son is interested in that brand they are hard to find included in a discount.

Sephora, Pandora and Uggs are some other brands that I often hear opting out of any discount at stores with store wide sales.

Levis sales are terrible too.

After all my talk about being MVC I just checked and I didn't make the minimum in 2016 :rotfl: My statement told me that I needed to spend something like $110 more. Oh well, I guess I can't even remember what the difference is for MVC. Exclusive discounts... does that mean the peel off 30, 20, 10? I thought that was for everyone... Hmmm. Kohls just hasn't drawn me in like in the past I guess. I do remember some good free shipping codes to combine with the sale for MVC. I liked those.

I work at Kohl's part time and I can vouch for this. The restriction on coupons comes direct from Nike, Levi etc. The store is not allowed to discount at any rate that does not come down from them.

somewhat on topic -- if anyone uses Ebates, they are giving 14% back today on Kohls purchases.

That is off of anything you buy -- so you would be able to buy Nike/Levi etc....and get and at least get 14% back to your Ebates account.
