Kodak Easyshare 6340

I have a Kodak Easyshare 6340. I would love to take night time pictures of the castle, Wishes, Spectromagic, etc., but my camera doesn't function that well at night. There is a night setting, but it is difficult to keep the camera still without having a tripod (which I don't want to carry about) or something to sit it on. I have a PAS setting. Can anyone give me any information on how to use this properly?

For many low light shots, you just have to have a tripod. Even high end pro cameras must keep the shutter open long enough to get enough light in the lens. Have you considered a table top tripod? They are not difficult to carry around.

I am not sure what your PAS mode is. To get the most out of low light you need a manual mode. The shutter speed for fireworks should be around 2 secs. Spectro is much trickier. You have to keep a faster shutter to prevent motion blur, so that means that you must open the aperture more and bump up the ISO. This leads to more noise and a smaller depth of field. These shots are tough for a p&s camera.

I have a Kodak Z650 and tried the PAS settings, but they only went to 400 ISO which isn't enough for a crisp picture without a tripod. I found myself setting my camera on trash cans in the parks and propping it up with my fingers to get the shots I wanted. Someone told me when I got back that they use a bag of rice because it's easy to form and it's easier to hold steady than your fingers for when you don't have a tripod handy.
