For those of you who are unfamiliar with what a bicornuate uterus is, you can check it out here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicornuate_uterus
Anyway, my sister had this, but got surgery last March to fix it. She still can't get pregnant and it's so sad. I know it's bothering her more than she's saying. She's 31 and all of her friends are having babies now. Do you know of anyone with this condition who's had a successful pregnancy? Or if you know someone who wasn't able to get pregnant because of it, I'd like to hear their/your story if you don't mind. :goodvibes

Oh dear! I am so sorry. Sending lots of positive thoughts to your sister.

I think there is an old DISer who had this - or something like this. I wish I could remember who she was. If I think of it, I will PM you.

I actually have a bicornuate uterus. It is very rare. Feel free to PM me with any questions. Oh and yes, I have a beautiful, healthy son who is going to be 1 year old in 2 weeks:goodvibes

Is she sure she has a bicornuate uterus? Surgery is usually not done to "fix" this type of uterus. Now a septate uterus is very similiar but can be fixed. Like I said PM me if you have any questions and I will happily answer.

I don't know anyone personally, but I was a labor and delivery nurse for 15 years at a Medical University.

I've seen dozens of women delivery healthy babies.

I also have a bicornuate uterus. My Dr. didn't find mine until my 2nd pregnancy (ended in a miscarriage though) I had my son just fine with no problems. The only reason the Dr. found mine was because I was bleeding during my 2nd pregnancy and he couldn't figure out where it was coming from. He was doing an ultrasound and freaked out saying my baby was growing on the OUTSIDE of my uterus. :confused3 He sent me to a specialist and she found the bicornuate uterus. I am having the hardest time getting pregnant again. (I also have PCOS) We have been trying for close to 5 years with no luck. But my NEW Dr. assures me that it can and hopefully will happen so I try to just stay positive. It sure can be frustrating though. Tell her good luck and it will happen.

I also have never heard of a surgery to fix a bicornuate uterus. I know there is a surgery for a septated uterus (Which is close to bicornuate only there is just tissue with little or no blood supply to it that is seperating both sections of the uterus and they remove it to “open” the uterus, but a bicornuate uterus is formed like a heart. I believe there is no surgery to fix a bicornuate
uterus.

Come to think of it, I think it is a septated uterus she had. When I thought about it this morning all I could remember was "heart shaped uterus" and that's what I typed.

:grouphug: Sending hugs to you in the hope you'll be able to get pregnant again very soon.

One of my very dear friends had a septate. Underwent surgery and then tried for over a year to have a baby. She finally got pregnant at like the 15 month mark. Her little boy is just over 3.

I know of a few other women in the same place...it's common, I guess? Does she have any other underlying issues - PCOS, low progesterone, etc?

I wish I could say yes but we had 4 miscarriages one when I was carrying twins.
Due to other health issues I had a complete hysterectomy and the surgeon reported that I never could have carried a pregnancy to term or near term. This was even after several surgeries to "correct" my uterus.

A former coworker's wife has a bicornuate uterus. She got pregnant easily enough, but delivered very early. After a couple of months in the hospital, their son came home happy and healthy.

Good luck to your sister. :grouphug:

I have one. We didn't know I had one until I started having problems with my pregnancy at 8 weeks. I started preterm labor at around 28 weeks and had to stay in bed until 36.5 weeks. At that time, my dr told me I could go to the mall and get whatever things we still needed for the baby. She was born 36 hours later...:) I was very lucky she was a very healthy 7.7 lb baby and was 22" long, so the fact she was 3 weeks early didn't effect her health and we all went home together 4 days later.

I only got up to go to the bathroom, walk to the kitchen and to see my dr once a week. Luckily, I only gained 27 lbs during my pregnancy. I was so worried I would blow up like a balloon because I couldn't exercise that I really watched what I ate.

I have a full septum bicornuate, and had a specialist in Boston as my OB who told me I should never get pregnant again because I wouldn't be able to hold a second pregnancy long. She told me that it was easier to have a healthy child with a first pregancy but seconds (with uterus's like mine) it was rare to not miscarry by 6 months...:(

I have a casual friend who also has one and she did miscarriage her second at 6 months at a rest stop along the highway, unfortunately....:( It was very sad for them. After that, my DH and I decided we were really happy with our incredible daughter and she was going to be it. Honestly, I never had any emotional problems with not having a second child.

I know it is difficult for many couples but there are so many options available today if a couple really wants a family. I personally don't believe you have to give birth to a child to raise a child.

I wish your sister the best!
